Albiani’s take

Positives:

  • URI football playing a complete game leading to their first win of the season against Delaware. The win was an overall team win. The Rams held Delaware to just 3-of-14 on third down conversions and did not allow a fourth down conversion on the Blue Hens’ two attempts. Great rebound for the defense off last week’s disappointing effort against Brown.
  • The improved discipline for the Rams’ football team really showed on Saturday. They committed just four penalties for 24 yards, and had no turnovers. They also stayed committed to the run, which paid off in a big way.
  • The women’s tennis team placing two duos in third place in their respective flights. Anna Peacock and Jordan Rucks in flight B, while Nicole Kalver and Elizaveta Sadovnikova grabbed third in flight C. A good showing at the URI Doubles Classic.

Negatives:

  • Rhode Island women’s soccer coming back, only to surrender a late goal that sealed the deal in a 3-2 loss against Richmond. After giving up two early goals and being down 2-0 at half, the Rams tied it, only to give up a goal in the 82nd minute. Picked to finish fifth in the preseason poll in the Atlantic 10, the women’s team has struggled mightily, now just sitting at 3-9-1 and in last place in the Atlantic 10.

  • URI men’s soccer coming off a solid performance to no. 18 Saint Louis, blowing a lead, and losing to UMASS. After leading 1-0 at half, the Minutemen scored two goals in just 21 minutes. The Rams tied it up 10 minutes later, but then gave up the winning goal with just 30 seconds remaining until stoppage time. A tough loss to a team that is by far inferior.

Players of the Week:

Shelby Aarden (placed 21st in New England Championship) – The freshman was by far the best performer for the URI women’s cross country team.

Harold Cooper (20-0 win vs Delaware) – Cooper had 28 carries for 123 yards and a touchdown. He also caught three passes for 20 yards. This guy can do everything.

Tez Wilson (20-0 win vs Delaware) – Wilson got a 25-yard interception return for a touchdown, putting URI up 17-0 at the time.

Team of the Week: URI men’s football team (20-0 win vs Delaware); The Rams finally ended their losing skid with a complete team effort against the Blue Hens, scoring in every quarter.

Off the Record:  The Patriots have their most points ever through four games with 149. The 2007 Patriots, who recorded the most points in a season at the time (since passed by the Broncos in 2013) had 148 through their first four games.
