University announces summer abroad programs

The Office of International Education at the University of Rhode Island recently announced its list of summer 2019 faculty-led study abroad opportunities for students.

The programs allow students to earn credits towards their URI or university degree while studying abroad. The programs are open to almost anyone; you don’t have to be a student at URI to participate in a trip.

The International Center’s website says that the faculty-led programs are also available to “degree-seeking and non-degree-seeking students including teachers, parents and other professionals.”

Each program does correlate with a major or concentration, however. Some of the opportunities include Québec City, Cape Verde for history and politics and Italy for film.

One interesting trip will take place in Rhode Island and Mexico studying Field Methods in Shark Research. This two-week-long, three-credit trip will combine local and international learning to better student understanding. It begins with a week dedicated to exploring Rhode Island waters to conduct fishing surveys. The second week the group will travel to Isla Mujeres, Mexico where they will investigate the field methods used for research on whale sharks.

Most of the trips will include traveling abroad, but there are some local options as well. One option comes from the Harrington School for Communication and Media, entitled the Career Rhode Trip. This program includes classroom learning on the URI Kingston campus but also interning with professionals in the Boston area for credit.

Another local opportunity includes the Chinese Flagship Immersion Program. Completing a summer program is a requirement of this program, but students have different options to choose from. Students at the 100-level attend an immersion program on campus to aid in language proficiency. Higher level students will go abroad and study at a university in China.

Applications can be found on the Office of International Education’s website. The deadline to apply for a majority of these programs is March 1, 2019.
