Positives:
- The Rhode Island women’s volleyball team won its third and fourth straight this weekend, including against one of the top conference opponents in George Washington University. With the win over George Washington, on the road, the Rams now move into sole possession of third place in the Atlantic 10 standings with a 6-3 mark in conference and a 16-6 record overall.
- The late goal by senior Mike Casey to give the URI men’s soccer team the last-second victory over conference bottom dweller La Salle University. The goal by Casey was scored in the 91st minute of the match and was his second of the year.
- The Rhode Island men’s soccer team’s chances in the Atlantic 10 tournament are looking increasingly better. With their final two games coming against Duquesne University and George Mason University, the Rams should win both and should get a top-4 seed. After beating George Washington, and tying Saint Louis, they have proven they can beat anyone.
Negatives:
- The Rhody women’s soccer team lost their 11th game in a row, getting shut out for the second straight match, the latest coming at Duquesne. The shutout marks the eighth game this season they have been held without a goal, six more than all of last season.
- The URI women’s volleyball heartbreaking losses earlier in the season to the University of Saint Louis and the University of Dayton could potentially cost the team seeding at the end of the season. They lost both matches 3-2 and in both cases had the games well within their grasp. Â
Players of the Week:
Billy Walthouse (won Georgetown Intercollegiate) – This event took place last Tuesday and was their last of the fall season, but Walthouse was just named Atlantic 10 Co-Golfer of the Week for the third time this season.
Mike Casey (2-1 win at La Salle) – Scoring a winning goal is huge, but one in the waning minutes of the game is even better. The goal also saved a win against a vastly inferior team.
Audrey Castro (3-2 win at George Washington, 3-1 win at George Mason) – Castro led the team with 33 kills over the two matches this weekend, besting stud teammate Franki Darnold, and helping the team keep their win streak alive
Team of the Week: URI women’s volleyball (wins at George Washington and George Mason) – The Rams won their third and fourth straight games.
Off the Record: Â After posting two more sacks on Sunday against the Jets, the Patriots now have 19 sacks through just six games. In 2014, the Patriots posted just 40 sacks and finished tied for 13th in the NFL. This season they are on pace for 51 sacks, and currently sit fourth in the NFL behind the Broncos, Packers and Rams respectively.
