Positives:
- The University of Rhode Island baseball team had a fantastic showing this past week. After losing a tough 2-1 game to Quinnipiac on Thursday, the Rams responded and took all three in a series sweep of conference foe St. Bonaventure. Rhody now has a three-game winning streak after losing four in a row before this weekend series. They have a tough road ahead if they want to extend their streak, as they have a doubleheader with Maine on Tuesday, followed by a weekend series against Saint Joseph’s, all on the road.
- A great weekend for the Rhody women’s rowing team who swept MIT and Holy Cross on Lake Quinsigamond. They will look to continue their momentum from this sweep on May 8, when they compete in the Atlantic 10 Championships.
- The men’s and women’s track and field teams each had success at the decathlon and heptathlon respectively, with URI junior Jacob Moran grabbing fourth for the men, and junior Hannah Madison and senior Michelle Savoie coming in second and third respectively. The men’s and women’s teams also had numerous personal and season bests at the Penn Relays, making it yet another successful week for the perennially great program.
Negatives:
- A tough weekend for the women’s softball team as they got annihilated in their series at home against Fordham. In the series, they scored just nine runs in the three games, but worse, they allowed 37. This has been a rough past few weeks, as in their last 14 games Rhode Island is 1-13, having been outscored 111-37 during that stretch. Here’s hoping for a turnaround in the last couple of weeks.
Players of the Week:
Tyler Wilson (vs Saint Bonaventure) – Wilson is once again on here as he threw his second consecutive complete game and the second complete game one-hitter of his career. The run he allowed was also unearned to go along with eight strikeouts and no walks.
Billy Walthouse (UConn’s Til Duty is Done Invitational) – Walthouse had a new career low in the final round Sunday, finishing with a 66, or -6 par. Overall for the tournament he placed third and led everyone in birdies.
Team of the Week: URI baseball (vs Saint Bonaventure) – The team swept the Bonnies, outscoring them 13-5 in the three games and holding them to one run on two occasions.
Off the Record: Â The Hawks and Celtics Game Four saw the Celtics win just their fifth game in 30 attempts when they were trailing by 10 or more points. In addition, Marcus Smart, who shot just 25 percent from downtown in the regular season, has shot 38 percent from three in four games thus far with three more makes in game four.
