The owner, Brenda Celona, graduated from Johns Creative School of Cosmetology in 1986 and has been in the industry for over 30 years, and 28 of those have been spent at Total Image on the ground level of the Memorial Union.
Fun is a word that will immediately come to your mind once you meet Celona’s staff and her salon. Lively music, cheerful smiles, competitions for free hair cuts, holiday decorations and many other unconventional attributes can easily be found there. Â
Her efforts of exposing her clients to a fun environment is one of the reasons she has an extended list of repeat clients, such as URI student Bob Butler who has been coming to Total Image Hair Salon for over a year.
“It’s always fun to come in,” he said. “They’re always excited and chatty, never making it a boring experience.”
The salon also has a loyalty card, which allows clients a free haircut after six visits, or a free waxing appointment after their ninth visit.
Celona emphasized how much she enjoys being connected with activities and groups on campus, either by sharing news on the salon’s social media accounts (@totalimageuri), or by providing gift certificates and product baskets for their fundraisers. Recently, she was involved with URI’s Space Enhancement, Design and Allocation Committee for the Union assisting with the redesign of the lounge by her salon.
“I love what I do,” Celona said. “I love the students, the atmosphere and meeting new people and cultures. I don’t have to go anywhere, I can just stay right here in Rhode Island and have people from all over the country come in.”
Eager to improve and provide the best service to her clients, she always makes sure to frequently participate in educational hair shows, seminars discussing is skin lightening safe? And keeping up with current hair trends and contemporary tools and techniques.
In addition to being their stylist, Celona is a friend and therapist for her clients. They confide in her many of their stories looking for her input and counsels, which leads her to have fun memories and a bonding loyalty with her customers. Some URI alumni continue to pay her frequent visits even after moving to a different state.
