Positives:
- URI women’s volleyball bouncing back with back-to-back wins, first at Brown, followed by a home game against Fordham. The two games were clear domination for the Rams as they won a combined 6-1 in the two matches. Although both opponents were clearly not on par with Rhode Island, they needed to bounce back after losing three of their last four to Saint Louis, Dayton and Duquesne.
- The Rhody men’s soccer team ended the winning streak of the George Washington men’s soccer team. The men’s team has not always played up to their potential this season, but there is still plenty of time to turn it around. To take down a red-hot George Washington team that had won five matches in a row speaks of their ability to beat anybody.
- The Rhode Island men’s soccer team sits just behind first place Dayton in the Atlantic 10 standings. In conference the Rams are 2-1-1, while Dayton is a fantastic 3-0-1. Despite their ups and downs the Rhody men’s team is right there in the crowded Atlantic 10 field.
Negatives:
- The thumb injury to quarterback Paul Mroz really hurts the Rams’ momentum. After winning their first game of the season 20-0, Rhody fell 37-12 to Richmond, bringing a familiar sight to fans. Mroz had his weaknesses and faults, but had built some solid chemistry on offense, and had clearly made strides through the season. Here’s hoping for a quick and speedy recovery.
- URI women’s soccer’s miserable stretch has reached a new level as their losing streak has been extended to 10 matches. After starting out the year 3-1-1, they now sit at 3-11-1, and 0-6 in the Atlantic 10. Not the season they imagined after such a great season last year, and back-to-back games with four goals allowed will not help matters either.
Players of the Week:
Alec Font (team placed 8th in Rothenberg Race) – The sophomore’s 20th place finish lead to a great team performance. Font has now been the top finisher in the first three races for the Rams.
Dominik Richter (1-0 win vs George Washington) – Richter scored the lone goal of the match and gave the Rams a win they needed. Plus ending a team on that long of a winning streak is pretty sweet.
Franki Darnold (3-1 win vs Fordham) – Darnold finished with a match-high 18 kills leading the way for Rhode Island to win their second match in a row.
Team of the Week: URI men’s cross country finished eighth overall. On top of Font’s success, Alexander McGrainer, Kevin Seaver, and Zach Campo grabbed 51st, 52nd and 53rd respectively.
Off the Record: Â The Patriots have scored 17 touchdowns to just nine for their opponents, meanwhile they also have four different receivers with over 100 receiving yards, including six different receivers who have caught a touchdown this year.
