Women’s basketball keeps rolling, Softball start conference play with a win – This Week in Sports

Women’s Basketball:

FINAL: URI 46 – 40 Boston University 

FINAL: URI 74 – 64 Richmond 

The Rams won their first two matchups of the Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) this week, helping them advance to the Super 16 round. For more on both games, see Zack Petrick’s recap (page 8, rhodycigar.com).

Baseball: 

FINAL: URI 9 – 6 Washington 

FINAL: URI 6 – 12 Washington 

FINAL: URI 5 – 15 Washington 

The Rams won the first of three matchups against the Huskies before dropping the final two games of the series. For more information on the series in Seattle, visit Alexandra Shaw’s recap (rhodycigar.com).

Softball: 

FINAL: URI 3 – 2 George Washington 

FINAL: URI 0 – 9 George Washington

FINAL: URI 7 – 4 George Washington

The Rams won the first conference series of the year, defeating the George Washington Colonials in two out of three games. For more information on the Rams series win in Washington D.C, check out Sara Bernabucci’s recap (page 8).  

Golf: 

FINAL: 1st place – Carpetbagger Classic 

The Rams took first place in the Carpetbagger Classic in Urbana, Maryland on Saturday, winning their second-straight title. Rhody beat out 14 other squads to climb their way to the top of the leaderboard. URI finished +9 over par with 585 strokes beating out state rival Bryant University for the top spot. Fifth-year Brandon Gills came in second place individually, helping the Rams come out on top. 

Tennis:

FINAL: URI 1 – 6 Charleston 

The Rams dropped their matchup this weekend in South Carolina, as the College of Charleston Cougars defeated URI 6-1. This loss moves the Rams record to 4-9 having dropped their last seven matches. First-year Priyanka Shanker won both her singles and doubles matches. Shanker teamed up with fellow first-year Nikki Fernando to claim the victory in doubles. The Rams face off against Davidson this Saturday in Newport at 12:20 p.m.
