2023 was so last year, and so were its fashion trends. Fashion is always evolving, and so are we. Fashion tells a story. It is a way that we express ourselves whether it be through patterns, material, accessories, or colors. But what trends are in? What trends are out? Let’s find out.
Bows had a moment in 2023. Women were wearing bows with everything. Bows as shoelaces, hair accessories, sewn into sweaters and so much more. The bows helped women show their femininity and helped get themselves in touch with their inner child. Gracie Abrams, a popular singer songwriter, almost always has a bow in. Her fans started to notice this and wear them too. “Barbie” also influenced the return of bows. Women became more in touch with their feminine side.
Sunglasses made 2023’s fashion board. More specifically, 2000’s sunglasses. With public figures like Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner and Hailey Beiber, the Y2K sunglasses made a comeback to the fashion world. People started wearing these glasses with everything, in the winter, summer, spring, fall and even inside. Adidas ‘sambas’ became popular once again. The shoe was made in 1949 for football players to train on icy ground. The original design consisted of the three classic white stripes, the gold trefoil and the foldable tongue. People have started wearing these in every color imaginable. These shoes reached popularity in the 70’s and 80’s, and made a comeback last year.
Now for 2024 fashion predictions. Chunky jewelry is in. Charm bracelets are in. Charm bracelets are going to be the same kind of thing. Chunky necklaces with charms will be seen layered against not only solid colors, but also graphic tees. Chunky jewelry is a perfect way to spunk up a plain outfit. With the growing popularity in second hand shopping and thrifting, people are finding eclectic charms to add onto their jewelry.
In 2023, sports jerseys were a popular fashion trend. This fashion trend will most likely carry over to 2024. But this year, rather than jerseys, vintage sports graphic tees will be popular. They will be paired with low rise jeans, mini skirts, even long skirts.
Grandpa sweaters are back. Vintage knit oversized sweaters with unique patterns will be worn religiously. Whether that be with cargo pants, or mini skirts. Pencil skirts? They were popular in 2014, but they may be having their comeback a decade later. Pencil skirts can be paired with chunky sweaters, kitten heels, and a scarf. Now for colors, red will come back.
Red is a bright, fierce, confident color that many steer away from. This year, red will be worn whether it be shoes, jackets, hair color and accessories. Colors that were popular in the 60’s will come back. Within the past few years, muted colors have been people’s go to in their daily wardrobe. Bright vibrant colors like turquoise and other blues will become more popular.
Fashion is recycled. It always comes back around. As people evolve and mature, trends do too. Many trends come back later on and take a modern approach to their past designs.
What is out? What trends have we left in 2023? We have left bows in 2023. They were nice while they lasted, but now they are on everything, and it isn’t as unique. Also, shopping fast fashion is left in 2023. Websites like Shein, Romwe, Forever 21, H & M and Zara are going to be less popular, and second hand shopping will hopefully take its place.
As thrifting has become more popular, second hand shopping will continue online. Depop, Etsy, Ebay, Poshmark and Thred-Up will be the new way of shopping. Not only do you find unique pieces, but you are helping the environment by reducing consumption of trends that end up in landfills once they go out of style.
What is still in? Y2K sunglasses are still in. They aren’t overdone and that keeps them from losing their specialty. They make a great accessory for any outfit. Although sunglasses are usually associated with summer, the wearing of sunglasses in all types of weather is why they are iconic. They are unexpected which makes them interesting. Crochet tops are still in. These were popular in 2023 as they made great pieces for layering clothing.
The last thing that is still in is confidence. Any outfit can be iconic as long as you wear it with confidence.
