As we say farewell to 2023, great movies and TV shows of the past year will continue to be discussed heading into 2024. The Golden Globes and Primetime Emmys award shows premiered over the past month, with trophies being awarded to shoe in favorites and a couple surprises as well.
To no one’s surprise, Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” one half of the summer blockbuster duo of “Barbenheimer,” has paced the field, winning nearly all applicable categories at the Golden Globes, and looks primed to give a strong showing at the Academy Awards in April, picking up 15 nominations.
Meanwhile, Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” has struggled to win awards. Coming into the Golden Globes with nine nominations, tied for the most of any other movie on the ballot, it managed to come away with only two: one for Best Original Song – Motion Picture, courtesy of Billie Eilish, and another for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.
Outside of such a popular double-feature, a couple other films made headlines, along with the people who helped bring them to life.
Paul Giammati, who’s performance in “The Holdovers” netted him the Golden Globe for Best Actor – Musical or Comedy, was seen after the award ceremony at a local In-N-Out Burger with his newly acquired prize, an image which quickly circulated across social media platforms.
Meanwhile, television had no shortage of exciting offerings, with FX’s “The Bear” and HBO’s “Succession” sweeping many of the categories.
“The Bear”’s leading cast of Jeremy Allen-White and Ayo Edebiri won Best Actor and Actress respectively for their work, along with the series itself claiming the coveted Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy, despite many teasings on social media that the show fits neither of these categories.
“Succession” also turned in a strong showing, winning Best Television Series, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor, all in the drama category.
The Netflix limited series “Beef” won Best Actor and Actress in a Limited Series for Steven Yeun and Ali Wong. Another Netflix original series, “The Crown,” ended its six-season run with a win for Elizabeth Debicki, whose lifelike portrayal of the late Princess Diana won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress – TV Series.
Moving over to the Emmys, it was more of the same as “Succession” and “The Bear.” Both won their respective categories for Best Series. However, some new awardees burst onto the scene as well.
Character actress and hot dog enthusiast Jennifer Coolidge won Best Supporting Actress – TV Drama for her role in HBO’s “The White Lotus.” Quinta Brunson, who writes and stars in ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” also picked up an Emmy for Best Actress in a TV Comedy for her work.
Amongst this talented roster of honorees, music legend Elton John was also featured with his win in the Live Variety Special category for his recorded farewell concert at Dodger Stadium. This makes him the 19th person in history to win a career EGOT, or an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award.
With awards season already halfway over, all eyes now turn to the Academy Awards to see if “Oppenheimer” will continue to run the table, or if a new production will look to make a breakthrough. Either way, it has certainly been a year to remember in Hollywood, both in movie theaters and streaming services alike.
