After being on air for 24 years and being heralded as one of the most influential television comedies of the 21st century, fans of the show “Curb Your Enthusiasm” agree that the show has had a “pretty, pretty pretty good” run.
The show follows Larry David, former producer and writer of the show “Seinfeld,” as he plays himself. During the show, we get to see him interact with and generally annoy many famous comedians and actors who also play themselves.
Now entering its 12th, and what producer and star Larry David claims to be its final season, fans are eager for the finale and how David has chosen to say goodbye to Curb. On numerous occasions, the show has taken breaks and “ended,” but this time David says it’s really ending.
“It’s not even a hypothetical,” said David in an interview with Extra!.
Co-stars Susie Essman and Jeff Garlin have played the Greenes, friends of and the manager of David, since the first season. Both Essman and Garlin say, however, that it is possible the show will return for another season but are satisfied with Season 12’s finale.
So far, it seems as though Season 12 will have many of the same elements previous seasons had: Larry David will find a way to rub a co-star the wrong way and cause problems, Susie will find a reason to get mad at Larry and many social rules will be breached.
Adding to its reputation, the way this show has been written over the past 12 seasons has started a wave of similar styles in the comedy field. Each episode is pitched to the cast with a general outline of what David wants to happen. From there, the co-stars write their own lines and try to make each scene as funny as possible.
“With this show I write all my own lines,” Essman said in an interview with Stuart Heritage from The Guardian. “Every piece of filth that comes out of my mouth, that’s mine.”
Garland and Essman have started a podcast called “The History of Curb Your Enthusiasm” where they will rewatch every episode of the series and provide commentary on it. The podcast will feature many famous guest stars on the show in addition to Garland and Essman.
“There’s a lot of Larry,” Essman told the Guardian. “[He’s] My favorite person in the world besides my husband.”
Despite their battles on screen, Essman and David have formed a friendship in real life over the past 24 years of working together on Curb.
By the end of the 12th season, the series will have 120 episodes, with each season being 10 episodes each. Throughout the series, the show has featured powerhouses in the world of television including Ricky Gervais, Vince Vaughn, Shaquille O’Neal, Ben Stiller and Michael J. Fox.
Over these 12 seasons, there have been fan favorites that stand out amongst the rest. Episodes such as “The Doll,” “The Carpool Lane” and “The Ski Lift” received high ratings on IMDb.
The overall theme of the show is put best in the last line of the trailer for season 12:
“I really did the best under the circumstances of a person who hates people, and yet, had to be amongst them,” David said.
With that being said, while it is uncertain how Season 12 will end, fans are convinced that the season will be filled with long stares between Larry and other stars, awkward social interactions that prompt him to ask “What? No good?” and will overall be a “pretty, pretty pretty good” final season.
