This week, the University of Rhode Island student senate announced election results, honored Senators of the Month and reviewed potential budget allocations.
Spring 2024 election results were posted Saturday, announcing the election of President Elect Argha Goswami and Vice President Elect Sanah Feroz. Both Goswami and Feroz will be sworn in with new and returning senators on Wednesday, April 3.
President Rizk was present to award Senator of the Month to Sen. Ebrahimpour and Sen. Cronan.
“Senator Ebrahimpour has demonstrated exemplary dedication and effectiveness as a member of the academic committee, exceeding in his role as a new senator by actively engaging with underrepresented populations and advocating for their needs,” Rizk said.
Sen. Ebrahimpour acted as military and student veteran liaison as well as mental health liaison this semester.
Sen. Cronan assisted heavily in budget development, acting as vice director to Director Ethan Bose of the Treasury.
“Vice Director Nick Cronan has shown exceptional commitment and professionalism in the role as Vice Director of the Treasury, notably in his instrumental roles in creating and managing the Senate’s budget,” Rizk said.
A bill was approved to request standardization of curriculum sheets and “intent to graduate” forms across colleges. The bill will now move to the faculty senate.
“Graduate forms and curriculum sheets are different for every single college,” Chair Lauren Peckham said. “It can be really confusing, especially for people who have more than one major that’s in a different college.”
The potential change would be implemented with the incoming class of 2028 to avoid further confusion among current students.
Bill 55 was brought to the floor during last week’s meeting, and following discussion, was tabled to this week. Bill 55 would establish an Israeli Culture Club on campus, which was contested by several students.
Bill 55 was absent from the agenda of this week’s meeting and no further mention of the bill was made.
Senators reviewed primary budget plans, outlining the allocation of $1.3 million in funding to campus clubs. The budget will be reviewed again during Wednesday’s meeting to adjust for new clubs and potential mistakes.
Senators concluded the meeting by announcing their trip to Applebee’s following the meeting’s conclusion.
The next student senate meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 27 in Memorial Union room 300.
