Softball earns series win, Tennis’ streak snapped – This Week in Sports 3/28

Women’s Softball

FINAL (3/27): Providence 8-7 URI

The University of Rhode Island defeated St. Bonaventure University 11-2 on Sunday, improving to 4-18 on the season. Third-year Leilyn Alvarez, fifth-year Elana Gonzalez, second-year Kylie Bulinski, fifth-year Skyler Rapuano, fifth-year student Sydney Yoder and third-year Emily Power combined for six runs in the fifth inning.

On Monday, the Rams lost game one in a doubleheader versus the Bonnies 5-4, falling to 4-19 on the season. The Rams had 13 runners on base, eight of whom were in scoring position. They were 8-8 when stealing bases.

In game two of the doubleheader, URI overtook the Bonnies in an 8-0 shutout game, advancing to 5-19. Hernandez, Gonzalez, Rapuano, Bulinski, Yoder, fifth-year Cassie Swenson and Alvarez contributed to the shutout. Men’s Baseball

FINAL (3/26): Quinnipiac 4-0 URI

The baseball team suffered a 4-0 shutout against Quinnipiac University Tuesday, putting the team at 5-13 for the season. URI utilized seven different pitchers, only having two hits at bat and struggled to find any offensive momentum throughout the day. Women’s tennis

FINAL (3/21): Sacred Heart 5-2 URI

URI’s nine-match win streak was snapped after losing 5-2 against Sacred Heart University Thursday, causing URI to fall to 10-3 on the season. Fourth-year Valentina Cvackova was injured during the match, forcing her to retire, allowing the Pioneers to claim number three doubles giving them a 1-0 advantage. Fifth-year Nadia Rajan had a straight-set victory in the number two singles spot. Third-year Klara Nelander won number four singles. Second-year Nikki Fernando played number three, and first-year Steph Hylton played number five singles – they both won their opening sets before losing in three.
