Men’s track take home first place, Softball struggles in seven-game week – This Week in Sports 4/11

Baseball:

In the series opening game against UMass, a strong offensive showing in the third inning saw the University of Rhode Island men’s baseball team take an early 3-0 lead. Second-year Wake Forest transfer Evan Maloney had a strong performance from the mound, allowing only three hits and a run along with three strikeouts.

In the following series game, URI was held scoreless after going ahead 2-0 in the first, eventually losing 4-2. The team bounced back on Saturday with a 5-3 win to wrap up the series win, with help from a two run-batted-in game from second-year Will Hindle.

URI traveled to Brown University on Tuesday, which saw Rhody leave with a 5-2 win. Third-year Anthony DePino opened the scoring in the fourth inning with a two run homer to left field. First-year Scott Penney sealed the game with a two run single late in the seventh.

Rhody baseball concluded this week in sports against Quinnapiac on Wednesday in a game that saw 27 runs. Third-year Anthony DePino tallied four RBIs and a home run. Women’s Softball:

URI women’s softball dropped two of three games in a series against Loyola University Chicago over the weekend. Their lone win came during the second game of Saturday’s double header. The Rams entered the final inning down a run, but completed a comeback win thanks to first-year Zoe Rensel’s walk-off hit.

Next, Rhody traveled to Brown for a double header on Monday where they were held scoreless in both games. In game one, Brown’s Macy Borowski pitched a complete game, allowing only two hits. Game two saw Brown score eight unanswered runs in a five inning nightcap.

Another double header on Tuesday saw women’s softball take on Stonehill in Easton, Massachusetts. URI dropped both games by a combined score of 19-1 as their offensive struggles continued. For more on the matches, visit David Okula’s recap (rhodycigar.com).

Women’s Tennis:

URI women’s tennis team beat Atlantic 10 rivals University of Richmond 4-2 on Sunday. The matchup was the Rams’ Senior Day, which saw fifth-year Nadia Rajan and fourth-year Valentina Cvackova honored before the match. Rajan and second-year Nikki Fernando both won in singles and doubles, helping to lead their team to the win.

Rhody then hosted Bryant University on Wednesday, defeating them by a score of 4-1. Fernando took home another singles victory en route to a URI win. For more on the matches, visit Aidan Garvey’s recap (page 10, rhodycigar.com).

Track and Field: UMass Spring Invitational (4/7)

Men’s: First of 10

Women’s: Eighth of 13

Rhody men’s track and field won the UMass Flapship Opener over the weekend, just edging out the host school, UMass, by three points. Multiple notable first place finishes included second-year Alex DeStefano winning in pole vault, fourth-year Derrick Chalmers in long jump and fourth-year Chris Tavarone in both shot put and discus.

The women finished eighth out of 13 teams on Sunday at the same event. Fourth-year Virsavia Goretoy highlighted the scoresheet, earning first place in the 100 meter hurdles. For more on the meets, visit Justin Theriault and Michael Petraske’s recaps (page 11, rhodycigar.com).

Women’s Rowing: Overpeck Invitational (4/6)

Women’s rowing traveled to New Jersey on Saturday to compete in the Overpeck Invitational. Varsity 4+ crew of second-years Evelyn Tabor, Abby Galayda, Amelia Katula, first-year Maia Hembruff and fourth-year Alexis Moore won their morning race before a mid-day lineup change.
