‘There goes my hero’: Dave Grohl’s history of infidelity

On Sept. 10, fan favorite “Everlong” singer, David Grohl, revealed his humanity in more than just his music after announcing that he had become a father to a fourth daughter, outside of his marriage on Instagram,

“I plan to be a loving and supportive parent to her,” Grohl stated in his post. “I love my wife and my children, and I am doing everything I can to regain their trust and earn their forgiveness.”

Grohl got married 21 years ago to his second and current wife, Jordyn Blum. They are parents to three daughters, Violet, Harper and Ophelia. Grohl’s first wife, Jennifer Youngblood, married him in 1994 but they split up in 1996. Amidst their divorce, Grohl wrote the post-grunge revolutionary hit “Everlong.” with his band, Foo Fighters.

“Everlong” first debuted in 1997 after the divorce from Youngblood. The song has been performed live over 1,000 times according to Setlist.fm, a song statistics website. Grohl wrote this song in the midst of his divorce. New Music Express, the culture website, had an appearance of the Foo Fighters on their series, “Song Stories.”

In an interview with Kerrang!’s “How to Write a Rock Anthem,” in 2006, Grohl wrote that “Everlong” is about a consuming love.

“Being connected to someone so much that not only do you love them physically but spiritually,” David Grohl said.“But when you sing along with them, you harmonize perfectly.”

The lyrics depict an addictive connection between Grohl and a woman. Although the song was written during the time of his divorce, Grohl was stated to not be sad or happy but confused because he was falling in love with someone else. Louise Post from Veruca Salt. Post released a reminiscent statement about how she originally sang the backup vocals in “Everlong,” and recalled the times she had with Grohl during their then relationship on Instagram in 2021.

“The whispered section of this song was originally the dream I was having when the phone rang,” Post wrote. “It was a dream about us. [Grohl] later removed it and replaced it with his own whispers, one of which was a love letter to me.”

However, even after writing the critically acclaimed song, Post claims he was unfaithful to her as well. The Foo Fighters singer’s relationship with Post ended shortly after in 1997 when she claimed that Grohl cheated with Winona Ryder, according to Megan Elliot of IMDb. Both Ryder and Grohl deny these allegations. The musician has had a record of infidelity going back to his 90s girlfriend, Tina Basich, who reported after the split that he was seeing another woman during their relationship.

Grohl has made an Instagram post regarding his infidelity, and the newborn child that is involved. The music David Grohl created was nothing short of revolutionary, defining history with Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Tom Petty and more. Yet, the rocker maintained the reputation of a cheater as well. “Everlong” was a slow burn hit but even if an artist has passed their prime, are they excluded from cancel culture?

“They can try, He’s literally the most loved guy in music.” Threads user @gerardbraer responded.

Music over matter may be the card Grohl has been dealt. The drummer has had a history of infidelity, some may see the cancellation as unnecessary because you cannot teach an old dog new tricks. Despite his reputation, the American rock artist remains a fan favorite.
