Women’s Soccer:
FINAL (9/26): Duquesne University 1-0 URI
FINAL (9/29): University of Massachusetts Amherst 2-1 URI
The University of Rhode Island women’s soccer team went on the road this past week after winning both of the games during their two-game homestand the week prior. They dropped the first game 1-0 against Duquesne in Pittsburgh before traveling to Amherst, Massachusetts to take on UMass. The score was knotted at one going into the half before the Minutewomen pulled away with the game-winning goal in the second half. Women’s Volleyball:
FINAL (9/27): Dayton University 3-0 URI
FINAL (9/28): Dayton University 3-0 URI
URI women’s volleyball lost their Atlantic 10 opener to #24 Dayton in straight sets on back-to-back days this week. Third-year Aerin Bowman led the Rams with five kills and three blocks in the series. Women’s Tennis:
Minutewomen Invitational (9/28-9/29)
The URI women’s tennis team traveled to UMass this week to compete in the Minutewomen Invitational. They took on St. John’s University, Harvard University and UMass across the three-day tournament in both singles and doubles matches. The Rams came away with three wins in doubles action thanks to first-years Katharina Spieth, Grace Darcy, Nikki Fernando, Anastasia Petterson and second-year Blake Rothchild. Spieth teamed up with Rothchild to take down their St. John’s opponents 6-3 before working with Darcy to beat one of the UMass duos 6-1. The URI players who recorded singles wins were Spieth, who won two matches during the tournament, and fourth-year Klara Nelander. Men’s Soccer:
FINAL (9/28): URI 4-3 St. Bonaventure University
FINAL (10/1): URI 0-0 Bryant University
Men’s soccer continued their three game homestand with a win Saturday night. After leading St. Bonaventure 2-1 at the half, the Rams quickly took a 3-1 lead thanks to third-year Íñigo Etxegarai’s second goal of the night. The Bonnies rallied back to tie the game at three, but third-year Joan Sanchis’ header off a cross from second-year substitute Nate Yurkovic put the game on ice in the 87th minute.
They wrapped up the homestand with a game against Bryant on Tuesday night. Despite having a significant lead in both shots and shots on goal, the Rams were unable to capitalize on another shutout in goal from fourth-year keeper Edu Rodriguez as the game finished 0-0. Up next, men’s soccer will travel to Loyola University Chicago on Saturday looking to continue to build on their current three game unbeaten streak. Men’s Golf:
UConn Invitational (9/29-10/1): First place
The men’s golf team participated in the UConn Invitational across three days this week and came away with a first place finish ahead of the University of Connecticut and St. John’s. They were paced by first-year phenoms Tyler Bruneau (second overall, three under par) and Luke Stennet (fifth, -1). Third-year Aidan O’Donovan came away as the third Ram to finish in the top 10 as his performance (+3) was good for a tie in ninth place. URI as a whole finished with a score of +5, 10 better than second-place Connecticut (+15) and will be traveling to Long Island University the weekend of October 21st to compete in the Nassau Invitational.
