As the country’s final votes are counted, Rhode Island’s election results are in – the outcome marked a Democratic sweep across the state and saw all four bond questions on the ballot passed, which allocated funding to the University of Rhode Island.
Although the country turned red, Rhode Island voted for Democrat Kamala Harris with 55.3% of the vote, with Republican Donald Trump receiving 42.0% of the state’s votes. This marks the 10th presidential election in a row that the state has voted blue.
Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse was re-elected to represent Rhode Island in the United States Congress with 59.6% of the state’s votes.
Reps. Gabriel Amo of District 1 and Seth Magaziner of District 2 were both re-elected as democratic representatives in Congress, with 62.8% and 57.9% of votes respectively.
Four of the five state ballot questions were approved by voters.
Only Question 1 , the constitutional convention proposed every 10 years, was rejected, with 62.5% of votes against. The question calls for changes to the state constitution. This is the fourth time in a row that it has been rejected, with a 55.1% rejection rate the last time it was posed in 2014.
Question 2 , which proposed a bond of $160.5 million toward higher education facilities at URI and Rhode Island College, allocated $87.5 million to URI for a new biomedical sciences building. It was approved by voters at 59.7%, in comparison to the bond for URI approved in 2022 at 57.6% for $100 million in funding to the Narragansett Bay Campus.
Question 3 , which proposed $120 million to housing and community development, passed with 65.6% of voter approval. The majority of this funding will go toward affordable housing.
Question 4 , this year’s green economy bond of $53 million, passed with 67.3% – a slight increase in comparison to 66.9% approval in the last green economy funding passed in 2022. This bond will bring funding to various environmental improvements and conservation initiatives around the state.
Question 5 , which proposed $10 million to cultural arts and the economy, was passed with 56.2% approval, with partial funding allocated to plans for the Tomaquag Indian Memorial Museum to build a new museum on URI-owned land.
