The University of Rhode Island student senate met with Narragansett Town Councilman Jason Colonies to discuss building a stronger relationship with the Narragansett Town Council, passed three bills and nominated a member for the Senate Elections Committee.
One active mission for the town council involves a move to boost student community service initiatives, according to Colonies.
A starting point for this involvement could include student volunteer work at Narragansett Town Beach, which needs a lot of work, according to Colonies.
“I’d love to see a move where students volunteer a little more in our community,” Colonies said.
Going forward, the town council aims to check in with the student senate once a semester to get an update on senate actions, according to Colonies.
“We really run on rebuilding our relationships with the state, the university, the students, so we’re here to listen to you,” Colonies said. “I think that’s really important for you to know, ultimately, fixing the town’s relationships is what my main goal is.”
Having more outreach and strengthening connections to the Narragansett Town Council is a great way to promote community service on campus, according to Speaker of the Assembly Lauren Peckham.
“We have a lot of students [organizations] who prioritize community service, but I feel like, typically, a lot of it is focused on the URI community, or communities that are within five minutes of campus,” Peckham said.
The senate passed bills acknowledging Exercise is Medicine on campus, Sojourn Collegiate and National Organizations for Rare Disorders as senate recognized organizations.
Sen. Gianna DeLorenzo was nominated as a member of the elections committee.
The senate Constitutional Review Committee will hold its first meeting on Tuesday at 4 p.m..
While only seven members are in the committee, the report will be sent to all senate members, who will have a final say on the approval of the review, according to Peckham.
The next student senate meeting will take place on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in Memorial Union Room 300.
