The University of Rhode Island Student Senate met with members of the URI Division of Student Affairs, passed bills acknowledging three clubs as senate-recognized organizations and discussed a bill to add an off-campus renter liaison.
Dean of Students Dan Graney and Vice President of the Division of Student Affairs, Ellen Reynolds, spoke on behalf of the division of student affairs, providing updates on campus life and highlighting key resources available at URI for students.
“Our goal is that [students] know we are,” Reynolds said. “We live in this hallway, in this building, and we’re fully accessible to [students] and really want to partner to make the best experience we can for students.”
The Robert Rainville Leadership Awards Student Leadership Award has recently been renamed to the Maureen McDermott Leadership Award, according to Reynolds. This was done to honor McDermott, the former director of student involvement.
The awards will be held on Tuesday April 8 and are open to students by invitation only.
Reynolds discussed an upcoming town hall on federal action updates in Edwards Auditorium which will take place at 1 p.m. on Thursday.
The town hall is a great opportunity for student leaders on campus and will involve the URI Office of Global Initiatives and the Diversity Equity and Inclusion leadership panel, according to Reynolds.
Online appointments at the health center now provide students with seven day access to services, allowing students to make and cancel health services appointments online, according to Reynolds.
The student senate passed three bills acknowledging Sankofa Christian Ministry, URI MedLife and Rhody Exchange as senate-recognized organizations.
A bill adding an off-campus renter liaison was also discussed.
External Affairs Committee Chair Matthew Cayer made a motion to amend the bill for next week after objections on the bill from Sen. Cole Rinne and Student Organizations Chair Jacob Milner.
Student senate election results will be posted early next week on URInvolved.
The next student senate meeting will take place on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in Memorial Union Room 300.
