The University of Rhode Island Student Senate discussed bills regarding the amendment of bylaws outlining eight new constituency seats and met with the counseling center for a presentation.
The senate discussed a bill proposed by College of Engineering Rep. Cole Rinne, outlining eight new constituency seats which would be added to the student senate if passed.
The first bill regards changing the bylaws and the second bill regards changing the student senate constitution, according to Rinne.
The eight constituency seats would include representatives for a sorority, fraternity, veteran Reserve Officers Training Corps, student athletes, club sports, first generation students, transfer students and international students.
The senate met with substance abuse specialists, Catherine Calise and care manager Danielle Madden who led a presentation on the resources, programs and events available at the URI Counseling Center.
Whether students are facing significant mental health concerns or just having a bad day, the counseling center is open to talking with students, according to Calise.
“There’s no issue that’s too big or too small,” Calise said. “If it’s important to you it’s important to us.”
A presentation on a bill amending the student senate constitution was also given by Matthew Cayer, the external affairs committee chair.
The presentation discussed minor additions and changes which would be made to the constitution if it were to pass.
The senate chose to push another bill regarding the addition of an off-campus renter position until the fall.
A bill was passed acknowledging Rhody Roundup Line dancing as a senate-recognized organization.
The next student senate meeting will take place on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in Memorial Union Room 300.
