Women’s Basketball gets back on track, tennis spring season begins – This Week in Sports 2/1

Men’s Basketball

FINAL (1/27): George Mason 92 – 84 URI

FINAL (1/31): URI 71 – 69 La Salle

On Saturday, they traveled down to Fairfax, Virginia to take on George Mason University Where their defense struggled, allowing 92 points on the road. Women’s Basketball

FINAL (1/27): URI 63 – 48 UMass

FINAL (1/31): URI 66 – 52 George Washington

On Saturday, the Ram celebrated 80’s Night in the Ryan Center with a 15-point win against their fellow reigning Atlantic 10 co-champions, University of Massachusetts. The Rams then traveled down to Washington D.C. on Wednesday to take on George Washington University. After being tied at halftime the Rams exploded in the second half to win by 14 points. Men’s Track & Field

Riverhawk Invitational (1/27) – Boston, Massachusetts

The Rhode Island men’s track & field team traveled to Boston to participate in the Riverhawk Invitational hosted by The University of Massachusetts Lowell on Saturday. The scoring was individual, but was highlighted by fourth-year Matt Santy for placing second in the high jump after clearing 2.00 meters. Third-year Mason Brubaker also made it to the podium, placing second in the pole vault by marking 4.65 meters. For more on the meet, see Justin Theriault’s recap (rhodycigar.com).

Riverhawk Invitational (1/26) – Boston, Massachusetts

John Thomas Terrier Classic Invitational (1/27)

On Friday, the Rams women’s track & field team traveled to Boston to participate in the Riverhawk Invitational. In that meet, fourth-year Megan Wood won the weight throw competition (16.59 meters) and was one of three Rams to earn a top-10 finish in the event. On Saturday, four student-athletes went to the John Thomas Terrier Invitational in Boston and competed in the 800 meter and the 4×400 relay. Tennis

FINAL (1/28): URI 6 – 1 Siena

On Saturday, the Rams opened up their spring season with a win at home against Siena by a score of 6-1. Rhode Island won every single one of their singles matches in straight sets to help propel them to the win over Saints. For more on the match, see Ryan McKenna’s story (rhodycigar.com).

Swim & Dive

FINAL (1/27): URI 161 – 139 CCSU

The Rhode Island swim & dive team hosted Central Connecticut State University on Saturday where they celebrated senior day with a 161-139 victory. The Rams came from behind to steal the victory from CCSU by winning five of the last six events. The comeback was sparked by third-yearJunior Hannah Benavides when she decisively won the 200-yard breaststroke. For more on the event, see Matt Dimech’s recap (page 10, rhodycigar.com).
