Hip-hop artist Travis Scott performed at the Ryan Center Monday night and brought an electric performance to students at The University of Rhode Island.
The stage was decorated with cacti and desert cliffs, paying homage to Scott’s hometown of Houston, Texas. The DJ was set up in the middle of the stage in a run-down hot rod. Behind that stood a giant half-metal head of Scott, completing the artful stage design.
The vacant stage in between sets left the pumped up crowd anxious to see Scott. Chants of “Travis! Travis! Travis!†began to echo among the sea of students. One individual even crashed through the curtains on the side of the stage in an effort to get backstage. Just when the crowd couldn’t wait any longer, Scott emerged and the audience erupted.
Scott did not disappoint, bringing intimate and explosive energy to the stage. He kept the crowd jumping with various songs from his debut album entitled, “Rodeo,†as well as tracks from his earlier mixtapes.
A few songs in, after one track had just ended, the lights went dim and there was a long pause. Out of silence, Scott’s voice sang out,â€Oh my,†a lyric from “Oh My dis Side,†one of his most popular songs. Everyone in the crowd screamed when they heard this as Scott continued to sing the beginning of the song a capella. The DJ then dropped the beat and everyone went crazy, dancing along with Scott with their hands up.
After the song ended, Scott went down low to the front of the stage and approached a student who was desperate to climb onto the stage while being held back by a stage guard. Scott grabbed the student’s hand and pulled him on stage. The crowd went nuts as Scott and the student “dapped up†three times center stage.
Scott then looked at the student and spoke into the mic, “When the beat drops, you know what to do.†The DJ started playing the song and as the beat dropped, the student sprinted off the front of the stage, performing a front flip into the sea of hands of the crowd.
Scott kept the energy rolling with a track called “3500â€, another fan favorite. He later slowed the show down a little by performing the beautiful track “90210â€, showing off his abilities of not only being an electrifying entertainer, but also a gifted artist in both producing music and rapping/singing.
It wasn’t long until Scott got the floor of the Ryan Center jumping again as he performed the track entitled “Antidote,†debatably his most popular song. The energy in the building couldn’t get any more intense as Scott bounced around on stage as the crowd sang along to every word.
Scott then treated the audience to a track off his new album that has yet to be released. The crowd enjoyed it just as much, finishing off an outstanding show. As the Ryan Center cleared out, one fan said, “Dude, that was insane,†a thought that was most likely shared amongst everyone in the crowd.
No fights broke out leaving the building. In fact, a lot of people were still dancing as they left the show. We can only be grateful that Scott stopped by URI and delivered a performance like only he could as he now continues “The Anti World Tour†with Rihanna, Big Sean and The Weeknd. He certainly left an impact and his show will echo through the minds of the students that attended his amazing display of entertainment.
