We are so back.
Hello, and welcome back to the Good Five Cent Cigar. I’m so glad that you’re here and reading our first edition of the 2023-24 school year. We’ve put a lot of work into it and are eager for it to hit the stands.
Being back at URI, for my senior year and my last semester as editor-in-chief, feels surreal after a very long summer. It’s hard to imagine this being my final ride with the organization that has taken up so much of my college experience.
The Cigar has a lot in store this semester. We have an editorial board full of returning and recently elected editors that are dedicated to bringing the best student journalism to your newsstands every Thursday. I have nothing but faith in them and their dedication to the paper.
Last semester, we started “The Good Five Cent Cigar Newsletter,” a “mini Cigar” that has racked up around 150 subscribers in the span of 9 months. Each week, you can receive the most need-to-know headlines from each section in your email inbox by subscribing with the link in our Instagram bio and on our website.
Additionally, we revamped our existing website, rhodycigar.com, giving you all the same Cigar content you love with a new, fresh look. Special shoutout to our now-photo editor, then-web editor Aidan Cahill for taking on that project as a first-year and a new editor.
We created a TikTok account for the Cigar, @rhodycigar, and have been having a blast figuring out all the different things we can do with that new platform. We love watching the following count on our social media platforms grow as the paper expands.
I am proud of the work that we started at the start of 2023, and I know that it will only be getting better from here. It’s the beginning of a new academic year, we have a lot of new faces in the office and campus is buzzing again.
We can’t wait to show you all what we have in store. But for now, best of luck with the start of the school year. We can’t wait to provide you with all URI news for the 2023-24 school year.
