Underground, up and coming, underappreciated: Aryia

Pop-punk musician, Aryia, has recently started to gain traction and attention as the social media app, TikTok, brings new followers and inspirations to his music.

Today, Aryia has nearly 192,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, and that number continues to grow as his music changes to match today’s trends. While he started his career as a YouTube musician, his presence on TikTok has brought the most attention to his work and has helped shape the current direction of his music career.

Aryia’s career began on YouTube. Musical influences, such as the band My Chemical Romance, and a love of theater shaped Aryia’s early musical decisions, according to MNPR magazine. In 2018, Aryia self-released his first single, “I Thought That We Were Fine”. This song fully encompasses the emotions of a failing relationship where one half didn’t notice the flaws the other saw. While this song is more melodic and slow, many of Aryia’s early songs were more fast-paced and rap-like and replicated the sound of Post Malone, another influence of the artist who has been featured on his YouTube channel. In 2018, Aryia also released his single, “Mulholland Drive,” which received its own music video in 2020. This song masterfully combines the two styles of music Aryia was experimenting with at the time.
In 2019, Aryia released his first EP, titled “theselfwillrunriot”. This EP contained five songs, including songs such as “tearsonpages”, “everybodysaysishouldletgo” and “theselfwillrunriot”. “theselfwillrunriot” featured a similar energy to previous releases, such as “Mulholland Drive” and “I Thought That We Were Fine,” as opposed to his punk-rap hits. All songs on this EP, excluding “tearsonpages,” received a music video.

In 2021, Aryia self-released his first album “Candyland”. This album explored more of his roots in theater, and combined and explored many elements of the pop-punk genre. Throughout the album, there is a consistent pop theme, which is apparent in songs like “Trash” and “Post Traumatic Apathy and Misery”. The album also features heavier, more punk-rock elements in songs such as “Candyland”. Finally, Aryia stays true to his “sad-boy” roots with songs such as “Falling” and “A Goodbye Letter”. With the release of this album, Aryia released a self-produced musical directed by Charles Liu. The music video follows a teenage Aryia as he struggles through common issues, including finding love and the problems that come with addiction, something Aryia is no stranger to and has been very vocal about.

In 2021, Aryia released his single “She Don’t Like Boys”. This song blew up on TikTok and remains his most streamed song on Spotify with close to 12 million streams. It was this single that caught the attention of Velocity Records, which Aryia signed with in 2021, according to MNPR. Since then, fans of Aryia have noticed a slight change in his music. While his songs still feature punk elements, his songs are more pop-based and share a similarity to bands like Fall Out Boy. This year, Aryia also released his EP “Viral” with Velocity Records. “Viral” follows Aryia’s love/hate relationship with social media, which he has also been very vocal about in the past, and some of his experiences with heartbreak, according to MNPR.

Recently, Aryia has been promoting his newest single “Only One”. The artist used elements of BookTok, which refers to popular books discussed on TikTok, to write this song. Throughout his career, Aryia has used many different styles of the punk genre to share with listeners his experiences with heartbreak and addiction. As his career shifts once again to meet TikTok trends, listeners can be certain that Aryia’s influence and popularity in the punk world will continue to grow.
