Student Senate Report 2/14

In the aftermath of last week’s resignation of former Speaker Cameron Chardonet, this week’s Senate meeting nominated potential new speakers, established official election dates and welcomed two new Senate-recognized clubs.

The Student Organization Committee has postponed their president’s meeting until Monday, Feb. 26, and the Campus Affairs Committee will be meeting with Dining Services on Friday, Feb. 23. The Cultural Affairs Committee reported success from their Valentine’s Day booth, where students wrote “I love you” in different languages.

The Cultural Affairs Committee will also be holding their first Narcan training session in the Memorial Union on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 5:30 p.m.. Students can sign up using the link in their Instagram profile, which can be found @culturalaffairsuri.

The Academic Affairs Committee will be holding bracelet-making fundraisers in the Memorial Union on March 5 and March 27.

Election dates for fall semester senators have been solidified. Election packets must be turned into the Senate office in the Union by 4 p.m. on Feb. 28. Eligibility hearings will be held the following day. President and vice president eligibility hearings will be held on March 1. Elections will be held March 4 to March 8.

Nominations took place for a new speaker of the assembly, with three nominations. Acting Speaker David Rudoph was nominated, as well as Sen. Andrew Ebrahimpour and Sen. Elise Newman.

Sen. Ebrahimpour also proposed adding his position of military and student veteran liaison to the Senate bylaws. This would mean the position would remain permanently staffed, and would be trained by last week’s visitor from the Center of Military and Veteran Education Director Bob Flynn.

“I fear if it’s not [added], it will fall through the cracks,” Sen. Ebrahimpour said.

Two new student organizations have gained Senate recognition, the Surf Rider Foundation and the Animal Veterinary Sciences Club. The Surf Rider Foundation is a branch of the national organization, and focuses on beach cleanups and activism.

“They’re interested in doing other events as well, not just off campus,” Sen. Madeline Clyde said.

The Animal Veterinary Sciences Club will focus on both social and academic events for veterinary sciences students. They will hold events at the student farm, apple pickings and provide general assistance with animal veterinary sciences classes.

The next Senate meeting will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 6:30 p.m. in Room 300 of the Memorial Union.
