Chan-Smutko: Grammy nominations bops, flops

As we get closer to the Grammy Awards ceremony on Feb. 2, 2025, let’s look at the nominations that came out a few weeks ago.

Starting out with the most coveted Grammy, Album of the Year: The ones I anticipated to win are “The Tortured Poets Department,” “Short n’ Sweet” and “The Rise and Fall of the Midwestern Princess.”

“TTPD” by Taylor Swift has songs for any emotion you’re feeling like “loml” for sad moments, “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?” or “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived” if you’re angry and “The Alchemy” for happiness.

However, “Short n’ Sweet” by Sabrina Carpenter is filled with sass and songs to make you want to dance. “Taste” is my favorite from the album because it has zest and flirtiness if you need a laugh. Additionally, her songs have spanned the billboard charts this year, so it has potential.

While I don’t listen to Chappell Roan often, her singles “Pink Pony Club” and “HOT TO GO!” are fun to sing along to when you need a break from homework. I love how she started her career with an album and I am excited that she’s up against some of the biggest artists in the music industry.

I’ve seen on Instagram and heard from people I know that “Cowboy Carter” and “Brat” are flops and shouldn’t be on the list for nominations. I haven’t listened to them myself but I trust those people’s judgment. Queen Bey trying out country didn’t work and should stick with pop. I’m not a big fan of Charli xcx so I hope either Swift, Carpenter or Roan wins Album of the Year.

One album that I hope wins is “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grace)” by Eminem, which is up for Rap Album of the Year. The album keeps me awake and focused while doing homework. The album includes songs where Eminem is raw, like when he raps about his love for his kids in “Temporary” and “Somebody Save Me.” There are some controversial songs that I don’t mind but others might. For example, “Habits” and “Evil” are gruesome but it shows him trying to get rid of being Slim Shady and as Swift might say, starting a new era.

What I’m confused about is the nominees for New Artist of the Year. Why is Carpenter on the list when she has six albums out? Roan makes sense because she’s written hits like “Good Luck Babe!” which is up for Song of the Year. Benson Boone as well because “Beautiful Things” is a wonderful song and he became more well known when he opened for the Eras Tour in London.

As a Swiftie, I should be rooting for “Fortnight (feat. Post Malone)” to win all three Grammys but it’s become an overplayed song. I wish “I Can Do It With A Broken Heart” was nominated because I find it more relatable than “Fortnight (feat. Post Malone).”

For the Pop Duo/Group Performance Grammy, I’m praying for “us.” by Gracie Abrams (feat. Taylor Swift) to win because the performance of the song, which was on the Eras Tour, made me cry. I love the song itself and performing it live is different than listening to the recording. I’m upset that “us.” or “Secret of Us” wasn’t nominated for any other categories.

Last but not least, I’m certain “Not Like Us” by Kendrick Lamar will get Song or Record of the Year because of its popularity.

Stay tuned for the Grammy Awards which can be viewed on CBS or Paramount+.
