Lessons From A River Otter

I see the sparkle–

Corona kissing

Your boisterous splashing

Whilst seemingly unaware

Of the rapids that pull you east.

I remember those days–

The greens that

Felt more alive

Then they do now.

You dip down out of sight–

I imagine

To dance along with the Sun’s

Riverbed mosaic.

Maybe to search for

Golden treasure.

The shimmering light

People like me used to draw

When mothers told us to dream.

Nevertheless you drift east

Until completely out of sight.

At first I wondered

If you ever yearn

To tread upstream–

Searching for

Stars left behind.

As your wake dissipates

I finally see my own reflection

in the water.

I now know

The wisdom to surrender,

And trust the stream’s hands

To carry me where I want to go.
