The Student Senate recognized two organizations last night.
The first was Alpha Phi Omega, a coed service fraternity. This group is not associated with Greek Life and focuses on community service on campus. They also focus their efforts on contributing to Habitat for Humanity. They currently have 25 members and 11 pledges. This group was voted to be recognized as an unfunded student organization.
The second group is URI Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP). They focus on getting members out on the water to paddle board and working together to do bay clean ups, as well as race training. They currently have 12 paddleboards to satisfy the needs of 22 members, and are adding members every week. This group was recognized as an unfunded student organization with only one abstention.
There is still talk in the Student Senate of organizing a Commuter Appreciation Day, due the significant commuter population at this school. There will be more information to come.
On Nov. 27 at 5 p.m. there will be an Indigenous People’s Day celebration. The purpose of this is to inform people of indigenous culture and why we should appreciate it more.
There are efforts to incorporate technology into the student senate elections. This is a work in progress and more information is to come.
The large amount of laptops stolen from the library was also discussed at the student senate meeting. It is strongly suggested to bring your laptops whenever you get up. Also, to never ask someone to watch your things.
