Season 3 of the popular Netflix show “Outer Banks” was released on Friday, Feb. 24 and I watched the whole thing in the span of 72 hours.
This season had 10 action-packed episodes, picking up one month after where we left off at the end of season two. Warning: this article is going to contain tons of spoilers.
Personally, I hated the whole “Poguelandia” storyline of the whole gang being stuck on a deserted island that happened right at the end of season two. It honestly didn’t make me really excited for this season to come out, because I was like, “who even wants to watch them live on a deserted island.” I feel like that was just the show creators grasping at straws for another unfortunate thing to happen to the Pogues.
That’s kind of what I felt like this entire season consisted of: the show creators grasping at straws for more things to happen to the Pogues. “Outer Banks” is a pretty action-packed show, but a lot of the things that happened this season, I was like, “of course that happened.”
Anyways, I was really happy that they skipped forward a month, and that the Pogues escaped Poguelandia within the first 30 minutes of the first episode of season three. From there, it turned out to be a crazy season with a lot of storylines to follow.
John B’s dad, Big John, who’s been presumed dead but actually has been alive this whole time, finally reunited with John B, which was really emotional and one of my favorite parts of the season. However, Big John was a really annoying character in my opinion and I was kind of happy when he died in the end (oops).
Now let’s get into my favorite part of this season: the drama. I loved all of the relationships and love stories that developed from this season, from John B and Sarah’s relationship almost falling apart, to Pope and Cleo, to JJ and Kiara FINALLY getting together.
Big John didn’t trust Sarah throughout literally the entire season, since she is the son of Ward, who tried to kill him way back in season one. I get Big John’s reasoning behind not trusting Sarah, but there were some parts where he just wouldn’t tell her anything about the treasure hunt, which complicated things so much.
He also drove a big wedge between Sarah and John B, which most people hated about him, but honestly, I kind of liked that drama as a storyline. Sarah and John B are annoying together in my opinion, and I feel like they needed that spice to draw them apart and bring them back together.
While John B and Sarah were apart this season, Sarah cheated on him with Topper, her ex and probably one of the biggest Kooks there is. Topper is probably my least favorite character in the show. I don’t justify cheating in any way shape or form, but I did feel for Sarah during this season. She used to live this lavish life, and all of that got stripped away from her once she started hanging out with the Pogues. When she hung out with her old Kook friends, she felt a sense of normalcy for the first time, and part of that normalcy was her being with Topper.
Pope and Cleo are a cute duo. I’ve been rooting for Pope throughout the whole show. It was about time he found someone that will commit to him, after all the heartbreak he had with his short-lived romance with Kiara. Their “no love club” turned falling in love with each other storyline had me feeling all warm and fuzzy on the inside.
JJ Maybank is my favorite character on this show. I have been shipping him and Kiara together since season one. You could see their romance start to develop at the end of season two, and I really hoped that they would get together during this season. I am a sucker for a “forbidden love” trope, and that’s exactly what JJ and Kiara are together. When he went to go save her from the Kitty Hawk camp alone, and then finally confessed his love for her, I was literally screaming at my TV. These two understand each other more than anyone else, and I cannot wait for more JJ and Kiara action in season four. I’m glad that he finally let her in.
Now let’s talk about Rafe. I really liked his storyline this season and how he finally stood up to his dad. Rafe is a crazy dude, and you can’t really justify a lot of the things he’s done, but you can understand that in his twisted mind it all makes sense.
Now let’s talk about the ending – which was the most disappointing ending of all the seasons of Outer Banks. It was about time that they wrapped up this storyline, because you could tell they were running out of ideas, but from the looks of the ending, it seems like they’re going to have the exact same storyline next season, just with different treasure that they’re going to be hunting down.
Overall, this season was good, but it was “mid” compared to the other seasons of the show. I’m really not that excited for season four due to what I mentioned above, but I am excited to see the romances unfold.
