The 76th Emmy Awards took place on Sunday, honoring the best in primetime television.
A series about a female stalker that leads to a man facing deep past trauma, “Baby Reindeer,” not only won the award for “Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series” but received 11 Emmy nominations. The male lead, Richard Gadd, who also happens to be the author of the book, won “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie.”
“Ah, you’re all crazy, honestly,” Gadd said. “…thank you so much honestly. I wasn’t expecting this one at all and I didn’t prepare.”
This psychological thriller became one of Netflix’s 10th most-watched English language shows in June after it debuted in April.
“If I think Baby Reindeer has proved anything, it’s that there’s no set formula to this.” Gadd said. “You don’t need big stars, proven IP, a long running series, catch-all storytelling, to have a hit.”
Jessica Gunning, who played the role of Martha, the female stalker in “Baby Reindeer,” received her first Emmy award on Sunday night. Gunning took home the award for “Outstanding Supporting Actress in a limited series or movie.”
“I honestly feel like I’m going to wake up any minute now, this whole thing has been a dream,” Gunning said. “I’m so incredibly proud to be a part of Baby Reindeer…I’ve tried so many times to put into words what working on Baby Reindeer meant to me and I fail every time.”
Jeremy Allen White, who is best known for his role in Shameless as Lip Gallagher, took home the award for “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series” for his role as Carmen Berzatto in “The Bear.” This Hulu series entails an award winning chef returning to his hometown of Chicago to take over a sandwich shop after his brother dies. When receiving the award, Allen mentioned and thanked his castmates, stating: “I want us to be in each other’s lives forever.”
“This show has changed my life,” White said. “It has instilled a faith that change is possible.”
Elizabeth Debicki won her first ever Emmy for “Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series” in “The Crown,” a series that covers the inside and out of the British royal family from the year 1997 to 2005. Debicki portrays the late Princess Diana.
“Playing this part based on this unparalleled, incredible human being has been my great privilege,” Debicki said. “It has been a gift. Thank you so much.”
The Emmy awards never fail to inspire people. Whether that be hardcore fans, or even aspiring actors themselves. The LA Times says “The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards scored an average of 6.87 million viewers.”
