Football

FINAL (9/21): URI 28-21 Long Island University

The University of Rhode Island football team headed south to Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium in Old Westbury, New York to face Long Island University on Saturday. The Rams rallied back from a seven-point deficit at halftime with a 21-point fourth quarter to secure a 28-21 victory, bringing them to 3-1 on the year. Sixth-year running back Malik Grant scored three rushing touchdowns as the Rams leaned on the run game on Saturday. For more, check out David Okula’s recap (page 12, rhodycigar.com).

Men’s Soccer:

FINAL (9/20): Virginia Commonwealth University 2-0 URI

FINAL (9/24): URI 2-1 University at Albany

The Rams suffered their first loss in Richmond, Virginia against VCU in each team’s first Atlantic 10 game of the season on Friday. VCU third-year’s Papa Toure and Mouhamed Tucker scored in the 12th and 67th minute respectively. The loss ended Rhody’s nine-match unbeaten streak dating back to last season, and seven-match streak of scoring at least one goal.

The Rams then headed back to Kingston to take on the Great Danes on Tuesday. After a scoreless first half, all three goals of the game were scored within six minutes of each other. The first goal of the game from both teams occurred just 40 seconds apart from one another in the 75th minute.

Women’s Soccer:

FINAL (9/19): URI 1-0 La Salle University

The Rams swept their two-game homestand with a victory against La Salle in both team’s A-10 opener on Thursday. Second-year Lauren McDonald scored the lone goal in the 61st minute, which was her third goal in two games. This is the Rams’ first A-10 opener victory since 2021, and the win snapped their five-game losing streak against the Explorers. For more, visit Abby LePage’s recap (page 12, rhodycigar.com).

Volleyball:

FINAL (9/20): URI 3-1 Marist College

FINAL (9/21): Villanova University 3-0 URI

FINAL (9/22): University of Pennsylvania 3-1 URI

Rhody went down to Villanova, Pennsylvania on Friday and Saturday, competing in the Wildcat Challenge. The Rams took care of business against Marist before being swept by host Villanova in the final match of the event.

On Sunday afternoon, the Rams took a short drive down to Philadelphia to close out non-conference play against UPenn. The Rams took the opening set against the Quakers only to then drop the next three sets, heading into conference play on a two-match losing streak. Golf:

Ryan T. Lee Memorial Collegiate : First of 16

The Rams went to Fairfield University last weekend to compete in their first event of the season. URI secured first place on Sunday, finishing two strokes ahead of Sacred Heart University after going into the day in a three-way tie for first. First-year Tyler Bruneau showed out in his collegiate debut, finishing third with a score of -5 in individual play. Bruneau finished only one stroke behind first place and the chance to compete in a playoff. For more, read David Okula’s recap (page 11, rhodycigar.com).

Cross Country:

UMass Dartmouth Invitational

Men’s: Fourth of 44

Women’s: Third of 45

The men’s and women’s cross country teams traveled to Dartmouth, Massachusetts to compete in the UMass Dartmouth Invitational.

For the men’s team, third-year runner Lars Hogne was the first Ram to cross the finish line placing 15th with a time of 25:24.53. Overall, the men’s team collected 183 points, finishing fourth in the competition. For more, check out Justin Theriault’s recap.

For the women’s team, fourth-year Sofia Piccone was the first Ram to cross the finish line, coming in 15th place finishing in 18:09.54 with teammate third-year Lily Saul not far behind finishing 24th in 18:18.54. Tennis:

Providence College/Holy Cross Invitational (9/22-9/23)

Rhody headed to Worcester, Massachusetts for the PC/Holy Cross invite last weekend in their first match of the season. Saturday’s rain canceled the first day of competition, but that didn’t stop three Rams from shining as they went undefeated on Sunday. Second-year Blake Rothchild and first-years Grace Darcy and Anastasia Petterson secured wins in all their singles matches with Darcy and Petterson teaming up for a win in doubles play against Stonehill College. The doubles match ended short as the Stonehill pairing withdrew from the match. Rothchild went 3-0 in singles play, securing wins against opponents from Stonehill, Merrimack College and Providence College. Darcy and Petterson both went 2-0 in singles play, securing wins against their opponents from Providence and Merrimack. Up next, the team is headed back to Massachusetts to compete in the Minutewomen Invitational at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Massachusetts.
