This Week in Sports 10/10

Football:

FINAL (10/5): URI 46-44 Hampton University

The University of Rhode Island football team flew down to Armstrong Stadium in Hampton, Virginia to take on the Hampton University Pirates in a Coastal Athletic Association barnburner on Saturday. The Rams orchestrated a double-overtime comeback after being down 14 points twice in the second half. The 46-44 win puts the Rams at 4-1 on the year and 3-0 in CAA play. The running back duo of sixth-year Malik Grant and fourth-year Deon Silas combined 240 rushing yards and three touchdowns. For more, check out Aidan Garvey’s recap (page 12, rhodycigar.com).

Women’s Soccer:

FINAL (10/3): URI 6-0 University of Richmond

FINAL (10/6): University of Dayton 1-0 URI

The women’s soccer team split their two Atlantic 10 matchups last week against the University of Richmond and University of Dayton.

On Thursday, Rhody produced a scoring output not seen since 2008 with six goals scored against Richmond. Fourth-year Tierra Garniss and second-year Courtney Poon each scored two goals in the win.

Two days later on Sunday, the Rams’ offense was held to a shutout by the Flyers. Dayton third-year defender Kyra Karfonta scored off a penalty shot and put the Flyers up 1-0 for the only goal of the game. The Rams are 5-6-2 overall and 2-3 in conference play. Men’s Soccer:

FINAL (10/5): URI 1-0 Loyola University Chicago

FINAL (10/9): Duquesne University 3-0 URI

The Rams moved above .500 in conference play on Saturday with a win at Loyola Chicago. Third-year Íñigo Etxegarai scored off a cross put inside the box to put the Rams up 1-0 in the 76th minute.

On Wednesday, the Rams faced the Duquesne University Dukes. A penalty kick caused by fifth-year Isnaba Namussé put the Dukes up 1-0 in the second half. The Dukes scored two goals in nine minutes following a red card by Namussé. The Rams moved to a record of 7-2-3 overall and a 2-2 record in conference play after their second loss of the season. Volleyball:

FINAL (10/4): Loyola University Chicago 3-2 URI

FINAL (10/5): Loyola University Chicago 3-0 URI

FINAL (10/9): URI 3-0 Fordham University

The women’s volleyball team played the first three matches of their five-match homestand last week, with matches on Friday and Saturday against Loyola Chicago and a match against Fordham University on Wednesday.

On Friday, The Rams played a five-set thriller against the Ramblers in which three of the five sets were decided by three or less points. The Ramblers took control in the fifth set going on a 9-1 run to win the set and match.

On Saturday, Loyola Chicago made quick work of the Rams sweeping them in three sets. The loss kept Rhody winless in A-10 play heading into their match up with the Fordham University Rams.

On Wednesday, Rhody got back on track, picking up their first A-10 win of the season against the Fordham University Rams in a 3-0 sweep. First-year Havyn Rolle led the Rams in kills with 11. Rhode Island now moves to a 6-12 overall record and 1-4 in A-10 play. For more, check out Mike Sormanti’s recap (rhodycigar.com).

Rowing:

Head of the Riverfront – First of 33

The women’s rowing team opened up their fall season as reigning A-10 champions with a win in Hartford, Connecticut on Sunday. The Varsity 8+ team finished in first place with a time of 16:44.9, beating Williams College, who was second place, by a full 20 seconds. The Second Varsity 8+ finished in seventh place with a time of 17:46.82. For more, check out Bo Brady’s recap (page 10, rhodycigar.com).
