193 Coffeehouse concludes semester with debut artist

The University of Rhode Island’s 193 Coffeehouse hosted its final band night of the semester on Thursday.

The Coffeehouse has hosted a band night almost every week, according to third-year student Ava Colabelli, an events coordinator at the Coffeehouse.

“I like that we have a space where people can come and enjoy music on campus,” Colabelli said. “We don’t charge entrance fees or anything like that. [The band nights] are free and available for everyone.”

This semester, the Coffeehouse has hosted many different bands, with some coming from Connecticut and Massachusetts to perform, according to Colabelli.

One of the musicians who performed was Teddy, a solo musician going by the name of Teddy’s Music Club. He started writing music as a teenager.

“My older brother is a musician, and he inspired me,” Teddy said. “I remember when I was a kid jumping up and down on the bed as he played his guitar.”

This was Teddy’s first time performing at the Coffeehouse. He has performed at other colleges such as Manhattanville University and Vassar College, according to his Instagram.

“It’s a really cool spot,” Teddy said. “I love the setting; it’s a very informal, cool space.”

Other acts at the band nights are associated with the URI Musicians Guild. While the event is not associated with the guild, many of its musicians perform at the Coffeehouse band nights, according to Colabelli.

“Most of the bands from the Musicians Guild do their first show here,” Colabelli said. “It helps them get their name out there.”

Next semester, Colabelli is looking to host different types of events at the Coffeehouse on Tuesday nights, such as arts and crafts nights.

“It is like a community space, so we want to have more events that cater to different people,” Colabelli said.
