This week, the University of Rhode Island student senate was visited by Violence Prevention and Advocacy Services Coordinator Kelley Ryan, voted in new jury members and established a President’s List.
Ryan is a licensed therapist working with VPAS, the university’s interpersonal violence support system. Students who experience interpersonal violence, such as stalking, sexual assault or domestic violence, can visit VPAS inside Health Services. Students are able to access confidential resources, whether or not they are interested in reporting the incident.
The Student Organization Committee will hold a meeting for club presidents on Thursday, Nov. 13 in Pastore Room 124. The meeting will review student conduct rules, prepare clubs for the updated recognition process and new bylaws, according to Committee Chair Jacob Milner. Presidents who miss the meeting may miss opportunities to claim meeting spaces inside the Memorial Union.
External Affairs Committee Chair Arpan Singh met with the URI Police Department and South Kingstown Police Department to discuss towing practices within the Kingston Emporium. The SKPD has stated that they will report “further non-compliance” to the state’s Public Utilities Commission, which oversees towing companies.
Express Towing has agreed to not tow cars from locations without “proper signage,” according to Singh. The towing company has also agreed to tow cars to garages no farther than 10 miles. Towing services are managed by Express Towing and all towing complaints should be directed to them, according to Rhody Today.
The senate passed a resolution establishing a President’s List at the university in a 24-2 vote. Students are eligible for the President’s List if they receive a 3.8 grade point average.
The senate also recognized the Papuan Student Association, an affinity group for Indigenous peoples from Western New Guinea and Papua New Guinea.
