On Saturday, the University of Rhode Island women’s lacrosse team took a trip out to Pittsburgh to face the Duquesne Dukes in a 15-8 win.
The Rams got off to a strong start with three unanswered goals, with all of them being unassisted. Fifth-year Caitlin Dellecave opened scoring, followed by third-year Caralie Basuel and second-year Kate Cumins.
A goal scored by fourth-year Emma Raines for the Dukes made the score 3-1. The Rams responded quickly, netting three more goals to end the first quarter with a 6-1 lead.
In the second quarter, the Rams’ lead started to drift away when Duquesne found momentum after being down by five goals. The Dukes scored four unanswered to make it a one-goal game.
Entering the second half, the Rams had a slower start than they hoped for, with a goal netted by Duquesne second-year Mia Piocquidio to tie the game at six.
After allowing five unanswered goals, the Rams responded with two goals to end the third quarter. Goals were netted by second-year MJ Timpanaro and first-year Celie Shield.
Rhode Island owned the rest of the game, having a dominant fourth quarter to secure the win. The Rams outscored the Dukes in the fourth quarter 7-2.
The Rams will be looking to start a win streak entering Saturday’s game against Davidson College at the URI Soccer Complex. In their first game on campus this season, the game will be broadcast on ESPN+ at noon.
