The University of Rhode Island softball team came away with one win in a three-game set against Fordham University over the weekend and a loss on Tuesday to Boston University.
In the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, it was Fordham who answered first on a two-RBI double from fourth-year Nicki Sudall to make it 2-0.
Fordham scored again on a two-RBI base hit up the middle from third-year Mikayla Swan to extend the lead to 3-0.
Second-year Giuliana Ialongo got Rhode Island on the board with a solo shot in the third inning to cut the lead to 3-1.
Sudall’s big day continued as she had her third hit of the day for Fordham on an RBI single to make it 4-1.
In the sixth inning, Fordham broke the game open on a three-run home run from first-year Sadira Forcucci to make it 7-1.
Rhody could not get anything going, and Fordham hung on to take game one of the doubleheader.
In game two, it was Sudall once again for Fordham, putting them up 2-0 on a two-RBI single.
Third-year Riley Frickleton cut the deficit in half on an RBI double in the third inning to make it 2-1.
Third-year Natalie Maleitzke hit an RBI single to help Rhode Island even the score at two.
Fordham answered back in the bottom half of the third on a solo shot from fourth-year Eva Koratsis to put Fordham back in front 3-2.
Fordham had a bases-loaded walk in the fifth inning to make it 4-2 before Koratsis hit her second homer of the game, a two-run shot to push the lead up to 6-2.
Rhody stranded a runner in the seventh inning, as they were unable to get a win on Saturday.
In Sunday’s matchup, Fordham got things started with an RBI single from second-year Victoria Klimaszewski.
Rhode Island got all its scoring in the fifth inning, which started with an RBI single from fourth-year Kylie Bulinski to tie the game up. Shortly after, fourth-year Becca Zawistowski hit a single up the middle to score two more to give Rhody their first lead of the series and make it 3-1. Rhode Island added two more runs in the fifth inning on a throwing error to take a 5-1 lead.
Fordham rallied with an RBI single from Swan in the sixth inning and an RBI double from Klimaszewski with two outs in the seventh inning to make it 5-4, but Rhody was able to get a fly out to center to stop the comeback and avoid a sweep.
“Sunday, obviously, we were more competitive,” URI head coach Mike Coutts said. “We’ve just got to be in the mood to compete, and Tuesday will be a tough one facing the best team in New England.”
Tuesday’s match was indeed a tough one for the Rams as they fell to Boston University 6-0.
After a clean first inning from Rhode Island, the Terriers got to the Rams in the second on an RBI triple from second-year Camryn Lyons. Lyons then scored a run to make it 2-0 on an RBI sacrifice fly from third-year Kyomi Apalit.
In the third inning, the Rams dug themselves a big hole, as Boston University scored two more runs to make it 4-0 on a two-RBI double from fourth-year Aimee Metz.
Rhode Island continued to struggle on offense, and the Terriers took advantage of that, putting the game away in the sixth inning on an RBI single from fourth-year Megan Coyle before she was caught stealing at second as third-year Kylie Doherty came in to score during the play to finish the 6-0 win.
Boston University had a dominating performance from their fourth-year pitcher, Kasey Ricard, who went all seven innings, only giving up four hits and striking out seven, moving the team’s record to 27-6 when she pitches.
The Rams were supposed to play a home game on Wednesday against Providence College, which was canceled due to the possibility of inclement weather.
Next up, Rhode Island will play a three-game road series against George Washington University with a doubleheader on Saturday and a game on Sunday, with all three games being streamed on ESPN+.
