The University of Rhode Island men’s hockey team took its second loss of the season against Drexel University on Friday, but gave the Dragons their first loss of the season in a bounceback win on Saturday.
The Rams’ defense was tough but not enough to stop the Dragons, who won 5-1 on Friday.
By the end of the first period, the Dragons held a two-goal advantage over the Rams.
Rhode Island’s only score came from third-year forward Cam Cyr, with assists from third-year forwards Aidan Darlington and Jared Weisert, in the third period.
“It was a full team effort.” Cyr said. “My linemates got me the puck and made it easy for me, but we have to be better.”
Second-year goaltender Nathan Hanisko collected 28 saves in game one of two.
URI received a total of five penalties across all three periods, while Drexel received four penalties.
The Rams tried their best to get more than one goal, taking a total of 44 shots on goal, but Drexel’s defense held firm with 43 saves throughout the game.
“It was not our best showing; I feel like as a team we can be a lot better,” Cyr said.
The first period of game two on Saturday was exciting, with Drexel scoring the first goal by fourth-year defenseman Adam Lizine at the 11-minute mark.
URI quickly responded, tying the game with a goal by Cyr just a few minutes later.
Another goal was handed to URI by third-year defenseman Jacob Costa, assisted by second-year Colin Callaghan and third-year Nathan Marshall before the end of the first period.
The second period was just as exciting for URI, with Weisert, assisted by Cyr, giving the Rams their third goal just over three minutes into the second period.
Weisert scored the third goal for the Rams. Second-year goaltneder James Hunt had a total of 34 saves during the duration of the game, including a shutout third period.
The Dragons’ scoreless third gave them their first loss of the season with a final score of 3-2.
“We have to clean up a lot of mistakes; we’ll have to go over some stuff and have to come out better in the future,” head coach Joe Augustine said.
The Rams move to a 6-2 overall record, fourth in the Division I Eastern Collegiate Hockey Association standings, ahead of a road weekend series against the United States Naval Academy.
