The University of Rhode Island student senate held two internal election nominations for off-campus representatives and a College of Nursing representative in a packed senate chamber on Wednesday.
A number of new student organizations and clubs are now officially senate-recognized.
Cultural Affairs Committee Chair Kairy Gonzalez shared that she recently discussed a translated student handbook with the Dean of Students. An update was provided on the upcoming Thanksgiving food drive put together by the Campus Affairs Committee. So far $1,500 have been donated, and the money will fund food for those in need.
The meeting began with committee reports. The SOC reviewed every club and organization that applied to be recognized, according to Student Organizations Chair Arpan Singh.
The review of applied student organizations began; Chair Singh encouraged Senators to discuss their concerns, questions, comments, ideas and recognition for each organization.
The newly recognized student organizations include the International Student Association, The Haitian Student Organization, The Cramer’s Savers Society, The Acknowledgement of Wildlife Club, The Dress History Association, Real Estate Club, Paranormal URI Club, URI Women’s Pre-Law and Acknowledge Exposure.
This also includes Cause for a Purpose, Early Childhood Education Club, URI American Red Cross, Public Speaking Association, Model United Nations, Agricultural Club, URI Art Club, College Diabetes Link, Landscape Architecture Club, Philosophy Club and Bird Watching Club.
The organizations can now reserve necessary space in the Memorial Union. There is also a long-term plan for a Memorial Union renovation, according to Lucas DeWitt, coordinator for organization advising and systems management.
The student senate will not meet next Wednesday in honor of Veterans Day. The senate will meet on Nov. 18 at 6:30 p.m. in Room 300 of the Memorial Union for a hearing on the constitution.
