The University of Rhode Island will host its second annual Rhody Halloween 5K to support the Exeter Animal Shelter this Sunday, Oct. 30.

The race will begin at noon on the Quadrangle, and participants are highly encouraged to come dressed in their favorite costume and to bring along their four-legged friends.

Christina Savoie, fitness and wellness specialist for Campus Recreation, hopes to see an increase in campus involvement, promising a lot of fun for a great cause.

“There will be a pet drive where we will be accepting donations, food, blankets, and toys for the pets in need at the Exeter Animal Shelter,” Savoie said.

Human participants are encouraged to dress up both themselves and their pets for a pet costume contest in which ribbons will be handed out for best dressed, as well as awarded to the top race finishers.

“In addition to our desire to help the shelter, we wanted to create a fun, friendly campus wide event for students and the surrounding communities, that was easily accessible and economically friendly,” Savoie said.

Savoie has been working with the rest of the Campus Recreation team to get news of the race out there. “a lot of our sponsors are from the Wakefield area, so we have signage posted there,” she said. “We also have posters in both gyms, the emporium and advertisements on our Facebook and Instagram accounts.”

The race is $10 for students and faculty, $5 for pets and $20 for non-URI affiliated participants. Registration can be done in person, in both Mackal Field House and Fascitelli Fitness & Wellness Center or online at runrhody.com.
