Say ‘Aloha’ to Flat Waves Food Shack

It is time to say aloha to the new beach restaurant, Flat Waves Food Shack, that is opening in the Kingston Emporium in early March.

Flat Waves brings a new Hawaiian flavor to the top of campus. As of now, the Kingston Emporium holds Mexican, Chinese, Italian and Mediterranean restaurants. This Hawaiian cuisine adds more variety to University of Rhode Island students. Flat Waves Food Shack will be located across from CVS, where Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt used to be.

Will Burgess, the owner, founded Flat Waves in 2010 in Middletown, Rhode Island. During his trip to Hawaii, the cuisine inspired him, and he decided to open Flat Waves.

“A lot has changed since the opening almost seven years ago,” said Stensland. Flat Waves expanded their location by using food trucks to attract customers at local sporting events, as well as catering weddings and special events.

The Flat Waves menu is focused around wraps, fish tacos, acai bowls and more.

“We mainly use major distributors. In the height of season spring, summer, fall, we try to feature one ingredient from a local farm and cross utilize it throughout our menu,” Andrea, Flat Waves’ chef, said

Flat Waves hopes to bring in students to try their signature Hawaiian dishes. One popular dish, called the Kalua Pulled Pork, is marinated for over 13 hours. In addition, the Macaroni Salad is a fan favorite to add onto any plate. Each entree includes rice, a type of sauce and a side. An entire entrée ranges from $8 to $9.

“We want good food for students at an affordable price,” said Sabrina Stensland, Flat Waves marketing manager.

If you are not in the mood for dining hall food, Flat Waves makes it easy with take-out and free delivery on campus. “We make it quick and easy for students on the go,” Stensland said.

Flat Waves prides themselves on going “Beyond One Meal” in their mission statement. Flat Waves serves more than just locals, as “a portion of every meal bought at Flat Waves, goes toward buying chickens that provide hundreds of meals for people in need of the Dominican Republic,” according to their mission statement.

Flat Waves Food Shack is also hiring students for employment, including summer employment opportunities are also available. Email [email protected] for more information.
