In what was the final match of the regular season for the Rams, the UMass Minutewomen swept Rhode Island, 4-0 last Thursday at the Mullins Tennis Courts.
It has been a tough last couple of months for the Rams, they fell in their fourth straight match against UMass, finishing their regular season with a record of 6-8, 1-3 in Atlantic 10 competition.
Both first and third singles were still playing when UMass sealed the win. Going into the match UMass was riding a five match win streak and a record of 16-4, 3-1 Atlantic 10 Conference competition.
At first singles Janja Kovacevic defeated Erin Chratian; 6-4, 5-2. They were unable to finish their match as it was called off due to UMass already winning four team points.
Sophomore second singles player Jodie Lawrence-Taylor took care of business of URI’s junior singles star Tiara Higuchi; 6-1, 6-2. Ruth Crawford beat Mihaela Codreanu at three singles; 6-4, 4-1. Like her teammate at second singles, Anna Napadiy took care of business against Halah Davis; 6-4. 6-1.
The closest match of the day was the back and forth match up at five singles as Martina Bocchi pulled out a close victory over Paulina Loredo; 7-5, 6-4. Jovana Bogicevic made quick work of Rhode Island freshman Sydney Chratian; 6-0, 6-1.
With any sport, teams are bound to have a rough season, just for the Rams it comes at a bad time as the team was looking like they were making some significant progress heading into the spring season.
Rhode Island will end their 2018 – 2019 season traveling down to Orlando to compete at the Atlantic 10 Championship next week. The event goes from Wednesday April 24 to Sunday April 28.
