Another red carpet means another “Hit or Miss.” This past Sunday was the Tony Awards and we have a lot to review.
Some common themes of this red carpet’s outfits were velvet, sparkles and bold colors, all things I can get on board with … for the most part. Some nominees and attendees crushed their looks while others, well, kind of missed the mark. I always appreciate a bold, unique choice, but sometimes, going classic takes the win.
My picks for five-star Tony Awards outfits were co-host Leslie Odom Jr., his wife Nicolette Robinson and Jake Gyllenhaal. Let’s start off with the married couple. The two of them looked absolutely stunning separately, and even more so together. Odom Jr. wore a white tux with some subtle black accents on the bottom of the sleeve and a black shirt underneath. There was a really unique cut to his tux that I loved. Robinson wore a blush pink off the shoulder dress that had various layered ruffles throughout. It was the perfect length and color and had the perfect amount of uniqueness. This couple looked amazing and they definitely understood the assignment.
My other five-star favorite was Gyllenhaal, who went with a light pink suit with black shoes. I loved this so much. I thought he looked great in the pink suit and it complimented him nicely. He gets an easy five stars from me.
My two four-star picks go to Bobby Wooten III and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical winner Adrienne Warren. I simply had to give Wooten III one of my four-star picks because of the fact that he wore a bucket hat that perfectly matched his navy suit. It all came together quite nicely. Then we have Warren, who looked gorgeous in a long white dress with a criss-crossed design on the upper half, which I think really worked for her.
Now for the three-star picks we have Aaron Tveit and Celia Rose Gooding. Tveit took home the Tony for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical for “Moulin Rouge!” in his all-white suit. I think that this look worked for him, but there were a lot of white layers going on, which was almost a little bit too much, and I would’ve liked maybe a little splash of color somewhere. That being said, I do like the look and think that it worked, but not enough to be one of my four-star or five-star choices.
I actually think Gooding, a nominee for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical, might have fit more into the four-star category because I thought her dress was really beautiful. She wore an all-red dress with a little bit of a train in the back and a layered look on the bottom. I think she did look really great, but just didn’t catch my eye as quickly as the higher-ranked picks.
Moving on to the two-star picks, we have Laura Linney and Debra Messing. As far as Linney’s dress goes, I just did not like the style. She wore a black dress, which I usually like because they just look very elegant, but it had pretty puffy fleves and it puffed out in the middle, kind of looking like a skirt, and then dropped straight down the floor with a little train. If the dress didn’t have those poofs, I probably would have liked it a lot better.
On the other hand, Messing’s dress was really boring to me and kind of reminded me of a silk sheet. I’m sorry, I’m sorry. The dress had no sleeves and just dropped straight down to the floor. One positive I’ll say is about the color; I loved the green.
Lastly, we have made it to the one-star picks, which I sadly give to Annaleigh Ashford and Beanie Feldstein. Ashford’s dress gave me a bit of homecoming dress vibes. It was a short gold sequin dress with long sleeves, which she paired with black heels. I didn’t love it for the Tony’s.
Feldstein wore a lime green dress with puffy sleeves and a puffy bottom with a different shade of green heels. I wasn’t a fan of the color of the dress and I didn’t like the sleeves either. I think I just prefer the darker green colors as opposed to the lime green.
I think that for the most part, everyone really did an amazing job with their outfits. Some looks I didn’t mention that I really did like were Patina Miller and her beautiful black dress, Ben Platt and his black suit, Kristin Chenoweth in her bright pink dress with a little poof to it, Josh Groban’s royal blue velvet suit and Joaquina Kalukango’s beaded purple dress. These outfits were hard to rate because so many could have fit into the four-star or five-star categories.
Overall, the Tony nominees and attendees get an A+ for their outfit choices.
