Maverick City Music concert unites audience members under shared faith

There I was in a situation that I wasn’t sure if I would ever be able to experience again. I was surrounded by thousands of people inside TD Garden celebrating our shared faith through the music of Maverick City Music. There truly is no other feeling like when you just hear your voice in unison with everyone else around you.

Maverick City Music is a Christian music group that was formed in 2019 with inspiration in contemporary Christian music as well as gospel music. I personally found them in 2020, and their songs provided me and a lot of others comfort in the time of uncertainty. Maverick City Music has become known for creating unity across different cultures and Christian backgrounds, while also gaining notoriety for its collaborations with other well-known Christian artists and other celebrities like Justin Bieber.

They also have all been known for their ties in community outreach and activism. Their most recent album “Jubilee: Juneteenth Edition” came out the day before Juneteenth this year and was written during the Black Lives Matter protests. As part of their tour, the band has been promoting Food for the Hungry, where people could agree to sponsor a child to provide food, clean water and more.

When the opportunity arose to see them live at TD Garden, I jumped on it.

Oct. 29 quickly approached and I couldn’t believe that I was back in the legendary Garden to see one of my favorite artists.

The concert opened with Lecrae, a Christian rapper.  Although I never listened to him before, Lecrae has over 2 million monthly listeners on Spotify. He started the concert off right by getting the entire arena jumping to some of his most famous songs, such as “Coming In Hot” and “I’ll Find You.”

Maverick City Music is known for having a huge group of people that make up the collective. They kept true to their roots and performed the songs just like how the songs were recorded. The stage was full of a gospel choir of about 40 people, two massive grand pianos, drums, guitars and the lead singers.  The band also announced at the beginning of the show that they have been working on a documentary and the concert shots would be filmed that night, adding to the atmosphere.

A key feature of the tour so far has been the special surprise guests that Maverick City Music have brought out. In Boston, they were joined by Kim Walker Smith of Jesus Culture and Israel Houghton, two very well respected artists in the Christian music genre.

Maverick City shouted out their Latino fans when they brought out Houghton and sang his most famous song, “Jesus at the Center,” in Spanish.

Another big part of the show was a speaker from Nigeria who led a sermon in the middle of the concert with some other words by one of the singers, Chandler Moore.

The band opened with some of their older and lesser-known songs. They also would perform some mashups through the concert of their songs combined with some classic, older and very well-known Christian songs.

The show ended with rainbow confetti raining down in a way to celebrate heaven on earth.
