My Guilty Pleasure: Welch’s fruit snacks

Everyone has their favorite candy, some popular choices include M&Ms, Hershey’s, Starbursts and Skittles, but while each of these is snack-worthy, nothing comes close to my favorite sweet treat: Welch’s Fruit Snacks.

I recently discovered these from a goodie bag at a hockey tournament. When I looked inside, I knew I had to try one. So I ripped it open and took a gummy out. As I pulled one out of the bag, I saw a crimson strawberry-shaped gummy.

I popped it in my mouth, and instantly I could feel a soft squishy texture and a delicate strawberry flavor – almost like Swedish Fish but easier to chew. That wasn’t the only variety though, there was grape, raspberry, orange and peach too. It was love at first taste, and soon after I finished the bag.

Now, I know what some people might think: all fruit snacks have the same flavor and taste the same. But as a girl with a sweet tooth, I can definitely tell you that is untrue. I have eaten many sugary things, from candy at Halloween to my mother’s irresistible cakes at birthday parties, and they all have their unique tastes. The same goes for Welch’s fruit snacks. The orange and peach are a little tangy, the grape is riper and the raspberry is strong.

Welch’s fruit snacks are not only delicious, but they are also (kind of) healthy, too! From reading about the company, Welch claims that there are vitamins in each gummy, mainly Vitamins A, C and E which are important for the body. Also, they have no fat, gluten or preservatives, making them the perfect sweet treat for many.

There are many varieties of the Welch’s Fruit Snack as well. The most well-known is the mixed fruit flavor, but they also have tropical blend, superfruit mix, island fruit and berry and cherry varieties. Superfruit has pomegranate-passion fruit, starfruit-kiwi, acai-blueberry, dragon fruit-blackberry and goji-apricot. Even though I have never heard of any of these fruit snack flavors before, the dual fruit combos sound interesting to me.

The island fruits sound more like smoothies than fruit snacks to me. I mean, you have strawberry-banana, tropical punch, pink grapefruit, mango and pomegranate-passionfruit. I may not be a fan, but I’ll have to try them first. You know what they say – don’t judge a book by its cover!

Finally, berries and cherries seem self-explanatory, but the flavors are everything you could ever imagine and more.

You’re probably wondering why this is a “guilty” pleasure. Well, it’s not just how good the gummies taste; it’s how much I yearn for them.

Now that I’ve tried them, it’s hard to restrain myself. Every time I lay my eyes on a vending machine and I spy some, I have this urge to check my pockets for cash, and if I have enough, I rush over to get a bag.

Once the machine eats up my money, I press the buttons and watch it drop down. Next thing I know, I’m reaching inside and snatching the bag of gummies for myself.

While the feeling of luscious Welch’s fruit snacks may not be for everyone, spotting them brings out the joy and excitement of eating them. So, if you can, I suggest you try them!
