Miley Cyrus released her number one single “Flowers,” the first song released off of her upcoming eighth studio album “Endless Summer Vacation,” on Jan. 12, 2023, gaining attention for her lyric choices and subtle digs at ex-husband Liam Hemsworth.

Miley Cyrus was my idol growing up – I lived, slept and breathed “Hannah Montana” when I was young and have always been supportive of her endeavors as time has gone on. When I first heard a snippet of this song on TikTok, I knew that I had to listen to the whole thing myself.

It’s safe to say that since the first time I listened, I never stopped. I listened to the song on the way to school on repeat on the first day of classes to “hype myself up” for the day and for the semester because it just emanates good vibes.

The song is an upbeat, empowering single that has themes of independence and self-sufficiency, with Cyrus repeating that she can love herself better than anyone else. It is the ultimate anthem for women who are recently single and finding themselves again.

We cannot talk about this song without discussing the “easter eggs” hidden in the lyrics that all point to actor Liam Hemsworth, who Cyrus was famously in an on-and-off relationship with since 2009. The pair officially divorced in 2020. In my opinion, the speculation surrounding the song makes it that much more enjoyable to listen to.

Cyrus released the song on Hemsworth’s 33rd birthday, which was the first thing that fans noticed before the song was even out. After listening, fans have picked up on a lot of hidden digs at Hemsworth in the lyrics.

Cyrus begins the song with lyrics like “we were right til’ we weren’t, built a home and watched it burn,” which not only describes a relationship falling apart, but also references she and Hemsworth’s former Malibu home that burned down in the 2018 California Woolsey fires.

The lyrics in the chorus of “Flowers” have also been gaining attention, as they seem to be the opposite of the lyrics in Bruno Mars’ popular hit “When I Was Your Man” that was released all the way back in 2012.

In “When I Was Your Man,” Mars sings “I should’ve bought you flowers,” “Should’ve gave you all my hours” and “Take you to every party ‘cause all you wanted to do was dance.” Cyrus takes this and puts her own spin on it with the lyrics, “I can buy myself flowers,” “Talk to myself for hours, saying things you don’t understand” and “I can take myself dancing.”

While it is not confirmed, fans believe that Hemsworth had dedicated this song to Cyrus at one point in their relationship, making this lyric choice another attack on her ex.

Amongst other lyric choices, Cyrus has been gaining a lot of attention for the music video for “Flowers,” with multiple things in the video being linked back to her relationship with Hemsworth. One scene features Cyrus dancing wildly in a black tuxedo jacket that fans believe is the same jacket Hemsworth wore to the 2019 premier of “Avengers,” where a viral video shows Hemsworth seemingly telling Cyrus “Can you behave for once?”

In my opinion, this one could be a stretch, but it’s definitely a “girl boss moment” if she did wear that exact suit jacket. Everything that Cyrus does is a “girl boss moment” in my opinion, though.

If all of these rumors are true, then Cyrus is a genius and totally got her revenge on Hemsworth. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when he first listened to the single and am anxiously waiting to see if he responds to it publicly.

Overall, the release of “Flowers” was one of the greatest ways to start off 2023 and the perfect single to promote Cyrus’ album. You can stream “Flowers” on Spotify, Apple Music or wherever you regularly get your music.
