Men’s Basketball

Women’s Basketball

It was a turbulent week for the University of Rhode Island’s women’s basketball team, who suffered their first two conference losses of the season despite a midweek win at St. Joe’s. For more on the games, see Nathan Robillard’s recap. (page 8)

Women’s Tennis

FINAL: URI 6-1 PC

FINAL: URI 3-4 Quinnipiac

Women’s tennis came away with a huge in-state rivalry win vs. Providence College on Friday, but couldn’t get the job done at home two days later, losing a close match against Quinnipiac on Sunday. For more about the matches, see Alexandra Shaw’s recap (rhodycigar.com)

Women’s Swim and Dive

Atlantic 10 Championships: 11th out of 11

Despite finishing at the bottom of the conference in last week’s Atlantic 10 Championship meet, several individual performances showed promise for the future. For more on the meet, see Nathan Robillard’s recap (rhodycigar.com)

Softball

Bob Heck Classic – Atlanta, Georgia

FINAL: URI 3-5 Eastern Kentucky (Friday – 10 a.m.)

Fourth year Rachel Zingerman got the Rams on the board early as she scored on a flyout from graduate student Susan Harrison in the first inning. Zingerman then hit a two RBI triple in the second inning scoring fourth-year Cassie Swenson and fourth-year Skylar Rapuano. That would be all for the Rams scoring as they went scoreless through the next five innings. Fourth-year Liz Lynchard got the start on the mound for Rhode Island, working five innings and allowing five hits and three earned runs. Second-year Noelle Sterner went out in relief and was credited with the loss after allowing one hit and two earned runs in one inning.

FINAL: URI 1-6 Purdue Fort Wayne (Friday – 12:30 p.m.)

It was a slow game for the Rams as they were unable to get any momentum. Their only scoring came in the fourth inning as Zingerman hit a homerun down the left field line. Second-year Katie Zaun got the start allowing four hits, five runs and three earned runs. She was also credited with the loss in six innings of work.

FINAL: URI 3-12 Purdue Fort Wayne (Saturday – 12:30 p.m.)

The Rams had the eight run rule come into effect as they were down by eight after five equal innings. First-year Casey Miller got the Rams on the board in the fourth inning as she scored on a wild pitch that went past the catcher. First-year Kylie Bulinski got an RBI as she grounded out, allowing third year Elena Gonzalez to score. Then, Harrison also got an RBI as Zingerman scored on another ground out. Zaun would have the start on the mound as she would give up five hits and three earned runs in two innings of work and would be credited with the loss.

FINAL: URI 7-0 Georgia State (Saturday – 5:30 p.m.)

Having dropped their last three games, the Rams finally found their groove after winning 7-0 against Georgia. Lynchard pitched all seven innings in this dominant shut out game allowing only four hits. First-year Hannah Hernandez and Miller scored on an RBI double by Gonzalez in the third inning. Second-year Leilyn Alvarez hit an RBI double in the fourth inning as Second year Emily Power scored. In the fifth inning, Bulinski hit an RBI double and Zingerman scored, Bulinski also scored after a single from Swenson. In the sixth inning, Miller singled and Alvarez scored. Also in the sixth, Miller would score the 7th and last run on a wild pitch that managed to get by the catcher.

FINAL: URI 3-10 Eastern Kentucky (Sunday – 10 a.m.)

Lynchard would be credited with the loss on Sunday’s game as she pitched 3.2 innings and gave up five hits and five earned runs. Zaun would go on to work 1.2 innings of relief. Gonzalez hit an RBI single as Hernandez would score in the first inning. In the third inning Gonzalez would score on an RBI single from first-year Becca Zawistowski. In the fifth inning, Zawistowski would be credited with another RBI on a sacrifice fly which would allow third-year Maddie Melice to score.

Baseball

Final: URI 2-3 Sam Houston

Third-year Sean Sposato got the start in the first game for the Rams baseball season, allowing four hits and one earned run in six innings of work. Graduate student Jon Morrison went into the game in relief and in two innings of work let up one hit, two runs and one earned run. The Rams scored two in the fourth inning after a homerun by second-year Rob Butler scored himself and first-year Michael Anderson.

Final: URI 13-3 Sam Houston

Third-year Tristan Levesque got the start in this Rams performance as he allowed four hits, three runs and two earned runs in six innings. Scoring started in the first as second-year Eric Genther hit an RBI single on which fourth-year Mark Coley scored. The scoring continued in the third inning, as fourth year Billy Butler hit a two RBI double where Coley and first-year Ryan King scored, then another two RBI double from Anderson where Billy Butler and second-year Anthony Depino scored. While in the fourth inning Genther hit a homerun into right field. During the fifth inning Depino scored on an RBI sacrifice fly hit by Second year Rob Butler. In the sixth inning of play Depino had an RBI single in which Third year Addison Kopack scored. To start the ninth inning, third year Alex Ramirez doubled and Second year Brody McKenzie scored. Then, Anderson had another two-RBI double in which Ramirez and Depino scored. Lastly to end the Rams scoring, first-year Jack Hopko hit an RBI single that allowed Anderson to score.

Final: URI 2-25 Sam Houston

First-year Braeden Perry got the start on the mound and worked through two innings of work allowing six hits, six runs and five earned runs. URI would go through nine pitchers with no pitcher seeing more than 1.2 innings. The Rams got on the board in the sixth inning when Depino hit a two RBI double, scoring McKenzie and third-year Calvin McCall.
