Game Guide: Super Smash Bros Ultimate

When I was younger, I used to go over to my neighbors house and play “Super Smash Bros Melee” on the GameCube. I always played as Link and would absolutely get crushed every time.

In March of 2021, I made a very spontaneous and smart purchase when I bought a Nintendo SwitchLite and my first Switch game, “Super Smash Bros Ultimate.”

I have wanted this game ever since it came out in 2018, and I was eager to play as some of the new characters added to the game. There are a total of 89 playable characters, 104 fighting stages and over 1,000 songs to fight to.

This game allows you to play with eight different people, whether it’s eight human people or eight computer characters. This is a feature that I really like because I can defeat seven opponents in one game, and if I really wanna get chaotic, I make them all level nine and see how long it takes for me to die.

My absolute favorite feature of this game is the fact that you can play tournament style, whether it’s eight people total or 32 fighters total. I have played the 32 fighter tournament probably more than 50 times, and I have won every time.

The “story mode” for this game is called “World of Light,” and it’s extremely long and extensive gameplay. The narrative for this story begins with the evil entity, Galeem, destroying the Smash Bros world, vaporizing all the characters and imprisoning them. However, thanks to the speed of his warp star, Kirby is the only survivor.

In order to unlock all the characters and/or save all the characters, you must play through this mode and complete the challenges. Or, if you don’t want to play through “World of Light” to unlock all the characters, you can go the easy route and play “Classic Mode” with specific characters, and you will unlock them all.

The base game has 74 characters with 63 of them being returning characters from the previous game. The 11 new characters that joined the game are Princess Daisy from “Super Mario,” Dark Samus and Ridley from “Metroid,” Isabelle from “Animal Crossing,” Ken Masters from “Street Fighter” and more.

An interesting new feature in this game with the characters is that the creators made “Echo Fighters” or move-set clones, which are characters who have the same move-set as another. For example, Princess Daisy is Princess Peach’s echo fighter. She has the same move sets as Peach, but instead of pink hearts as her symbol, it’s daisies; she also has her own taunts, stance, victory poses and voice lines.

Echo Fighters are their own character, but they mirror another character’s abilities with a few distinct changes to stay true to their own personality and animations. Daisy and Ken, Ryu’s echo fighter, were the ones I was most excited for because I wanted Daisy as her own character and not as Peach’s palette swap (costume). I wanted her in this game because she, along with Toad, is my favorite “Super Mario” character. I also wanted Ken because I really like “Street Fighter” and having Ken and Ryu both in Smash Bros is so much fun.

I know I’m still talking about the characters but I have to mention the “Legend of Zelda” characters because their new designs are awesome! Link’s main costume is from “Breath of the Wild” which I think is so cool, but he still has his iconic green tunic and elf cap. Link is the character I use the most because of his move-set and his hilarious voice lines.

Princess Zelda’s design changed from her look in “Twilight Princess” to her look from “A Link to the Past,” which I think is one of her best looks. I wished they would’ve used her “Breath of the Wild” look, but me and a lot of other fans were happy with the look she was given.

The fighting stages in this game are so well animated too, and there are 104 stages in the base game with additional ones with the character DLC. I love fighting on the “Final Destination” battlefield, which is a Smash original, and I like that one because it’s the easiest to fight on.

The songs in this game are so much fun too because it’s so funny how you can have an intense fight, but be listening to a cute “Super Mario” song at the same time. I will say, the Rainbow Road song is really intense and has made me sweat a little when fighting.

I absolutely love this game and I play it all the time or when I can. I really hope that Nintendo will wait on coming out with another “Smash Bros” because I think this version is the best one yet.
