Football, men’s soccer pick up wins at home – This week in sports 9/14

Football:

FINAL (9/8): URI 35-14 Stony Brook

The Rhode Island Rams football team took on Coastal Athletic Association rival Stony Brook University at Meade Stadium on Friday to open CAA conference play. For more on the matchup, visit Zack Petrick’s recap (page 8, rhodycigar.com).

Men’s Soccer:

FINAL (9/8): URI / CCSU (CANCELED)

FINAL (9/12): URI 1-0 Holy Cross

The Rams match against Central Connecticut State University was halted in the 34th minute on Saturday due to weather, and the game will not be made up. The Rams also faced off against Holy Cross on Tuesday, the Rams defeated the Crusaders 1-0 with the only goal coming from third year Ivan Montoro. Women’s Soccer:

FINAL: Wake Forest 3-1 URI

The Rams faced off against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons last Thursday at the URI Soccer Complex. Rhody fell by a score of 3-1 to the visitors as they are still in search of their first victory of 2023. For more on the game visit Nathan Robillard’s recap. (page 7, rhodycigar.com).

Volleyball: 

FINAL: Yale Invitational – 0W-3L

FINAL (9/12): Boston College 3-0 URI

The Rams fell in all four of their matchups, the first of which they lost in five sets against the University of Connecticut on Friday, before losing a pair of matches on Saturday – losing in three straight sets against Yale University before they fell in four sets by a score of 3-1 against Sacred Heart University. On Tuesday the Rams faced Boston College dropping three straight sets to fall to a record of 1-9.

Men’s Cross Country:

The Men’s cross country team traveled to Providence on Friday to take part in the Friar Invitational. The team came in fifth place out of six teams competing. First year Nick Martin finished in 12th place in the Six kilometer race.

Women’s Cross Country:

The Women’s cross country team went up north to Byrant in Bloomfield, RI to compete in the Nassaney Invitational. The team came in fourth place out of 11 other schools that competed at the event. For more on the meet visit Alexandra Shaw’s recap (rhodycigar.com).
