Football stays perfect, volleyball returns to winning ways – This week in sports 9/22

Football:

FINAL (9/15): URI 34-24 Maine

The Rhode Island Rams football team took on Coastal Athletic Association rival University of Maine in Orono, ME on Friday for their second CAA conference matchup. For more on the matchup, visit Aidan Garvey’s recap (page 12, rhodycigar.com).

Men’s Soccer:

FINAL (9/16): Dayton 6-0 URI

FINAL (9/19): Bryant 4-0 URI

The Rams’ match against Atlantic 10 Rival Dayton opened conference play for both teams. Rhody was taken down by the Flyers 6-0 in Ohio on Friday. The Rams also faced off against in-state rival Bryant on Tuesday, falling to the Bulldogs 4-0. For more on the matchups, visit Zack Petrick’s recap (rhodycigar.com).

Women’s Soccer:

FINAL: (9/14): URI 0-0 Saint Joseph’s

FINAL: (9/17): Brown 1-0 URI

The Rams faced off against the Saint Joseph’s Hawks last Thursday in Philadelphia, where Rhody and SJU tied 0-0 to open league play. The Rams then traveled to Providence to take on the Brown Bears, falling 1-0 against the Ivy League team. For more on the game, visit Kailey Lockwood’s recap. (page 10, rhodycigar.com).

Volleyball:

FINAL: (9/16): URI 3-2 American

FINAL: (9/16): URI 3-0 Stonehill

The Rams won in both of their matchups, the first of which they won in five sets against the American University on Saturday, before defeating Stonehill later in the day. Women’s Tennis:

The Rams competed on Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the International Tennis Hall of Fame Women’s Collegiate Invitational at the Tennis Hall of Fame in Providence. The Rams had four groups of doubles competing. The pairs of first-year Nadia Rajan with second-year Nikki Fernando and the duo of fourth-year Valentina Cvackova and second-year Sophie Hermann both went 3-1. Golf:

Temple Invitational: 8th of 14

The Rhody Golf team traveled to Plymouth Meeting, PA to compete in the Temple Invitational over the weekend. The Rams finished in eight place out of 14 teams in the competition. Second-year Aidan O’Donovan shot three over par to help to propel the Rams into the top 10.
