Men’s, women’s soccer shut out at home, Football falls on the road – This week in sports 9/27

Football:

FINAL (9/23): Villanova 35-9 URI

This past Saturday, the No. 17/18 Rams traveled to Villanova to take on the No. 25 Wildcats. This was the Rams’ third conference game of the season and Villanova’s first. Coming into the game, the Rams were 2-0 in conference play and 2-1 overall, but lost the game in a blowout. For more on this top 25 matchup, check out Zach Petrick’s recap.

Men’s Soccer:

FINAL (9/23): URI 0-0 La Salle

On Saturday night, the Rams hosted the La Salle Explorers in both teams’ second Atlantic 10 match of the season. It was a rainy affair, where both teams were unable to find the back of the net. Rams goalkeeper, third-year Edu Rodriguez, played all 90 minutes, saved three shots on goal and netted his third shutout of the season. Women’s Soccer:

FINAL (9/21): Duquesne 1 – 0 URI

FINAL (9/24): URI 0-0 VCU

The Rams played at home against the Duquesne Dukes last Thursday, losing a tightly contested conference play game 1-0. Three days later, the Rams traveled to Richmond, Virginia to take on the VCU Rams, where they ended the match in a 0-0 draw. Rhody team captain and goalkeeper, fourth-year Faith Hutchins, recorded her fourth shutout of the season in just the 11th game. For more on these matches, check out Abby LePage’s recap.

Volleyball:

FINAL (9/22): George Mason 3-1 URI

FINAL (9/23): George Mason 3-1 URI

This past Friday and Saturday, the Rams hosted their Atlantic 10 conference opener at Keaney Gymnasium against the George Mason Patriots. On Friday, the Rams would lose the first of the two matches in four sets and would return on Saturday only to drop the second match, again in four sets. These matches dropped the Rams to 3-11 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.

Golf:

Macdonald Cup: 11th of 12

This past Friday and Saturday, the Rhody Golf team traveled to New Haven, Connecticut to compete in the Macdonald Cup. It was a tough two days for the Rams, who were without their best player, fifth-year Bryson Richards, who missed this cup due to injury. Without Richards,the Rams struggled as a team and finished 11th in a 12 team cup. The Rams’ best golfer this weekend was second-year Aidan O’Donovan, who finished 19th of 72 individually.
