I’ve been recently rediscovering a lot of music I used to listen to back in high school, which consisted of a lot of Ed Sheeran, specifically his album “Divide” (NO Ed Sheeran slander in this paper). One song that sticks out for me on that album is “Bibia Be Ye Yen” an upbeat, feel-good song about waking up the next morning after making drunk mistakes. This song puts me in a good mood to start my day.

As the leaves turn to autumnal hues, the air turns chilly and the nights come early, a somber reality sets in for me; summer is truly over. My autumn playlist on Spotify, filled mostly with bleak classic rock and fall-inspired jazz, has one track in particular that grants the same deep emotional reaction upon every listen: “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” by Gordon Lightfoot. This song details the tragic wreckage of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald, a freighter ship that sank in Lake Superior in 1975. Yes, this is a song about a boat crash from decades ago, but I still get a little emotional when I see a big ship out at sea.

As the release date for AJR’s next album “The Maybe Man” nears us, I’ve been listening to the third track “Yes I’m a Mess” on repeat. AJR is always known to make relatable music and when I’m in my feelings, this song keeps me going. “Yes I’m A Mess” has a western theme to it with the steady rhythm and whistling in between the lyrics. Fall has been a tough time so far and I feel like I’m a mess sometimes, but instead of feeling down about it, this song makes me own it and move forward.

This fall, I’ve rediscovered “The Sun Is Shining Down” by JJ Grey & Mofro. An old busking favorite of mine, this heartfelt yet relaxing ballad is sure to brighten your day whenever you hear it. Written in 2007, the song has a mid-tempo groove akin to Aerosmith’s “Crazy” that is perfect for everything from driving in your car to studying or just relaxing. I first heard the song when I was 13 years old and have loved it ever since.

This month I listened to a lot of feel-good jams to lift myself out of the September sadness that I found myself in. “Kamikaze” by Omar Apollo blasted through my car speakers on repeat, most often on the way to school. I enjoyed listening to this while my windows were slightly cracked, letting in the perfect dose of fall air as I drove down an orange and yellow Route 110. While this song doesn’t scream “fall” by any means, it definitely helps to increase my academic drive for the day.

Recently, I took it back to my high school jazz band days with “December 1963 (Oh What a Night)” by The Four Seasons. I first played this back in sixth grade with my brother at his piano recital (I played trumpet) and grew to love the song, and I recently started listening to it again after a brief five-year hiatus. It has a nice, calming vibe that provides a vital break during a hectic midterm season, and it hits just right on a chilly, late October morning walk to class.

Something about fall always brings me back to one of my favorite artists whom I first grew to love on carides with my dad as a kid, none other than Billy Joel. While he’s been on shuffle for the better portion of October my pick this month goes to “New York State of Mind.” Although I go to school in Rhode Island, I cannot help but notice a smile on my face as I sing along on my ride to school amongst the vibrant changing leaves or walking through campus at night in the crisp fall air.

About a decade ago, I found a band called the Silversun Pickups through a game that I loved as a child. The song that I found them through was always one of my favorites growing up, but more recently I was introduced to more of their songs. This month, I haven’t been able to stop listening to “Panic Switch,” a dynamic indie-rock piece, reminiscent of the Smashing Pumpkins. To me, it does everything right with a driving and powerful chorus that envelops the listener in sound.

“Teenage Fever” by Drake has been on repeat for me all month long. I love his slower music that brings out his vocals, and this song does exactly that. It’s the chill vibe I like when I’m driving home from campus after a long day and puts me in a relaxed mood.

Fall is a time when I usually revisit my old favorites. The exhilarating and fast experience of summer has passed, and with it – a return to normalcy. One of these favorites I constantly return to is “Leaves That Are Green” by Simon and Garfunkel. It’s a song which literally and metaphorically exhibits change. While the song covers the theme of changing leaves, Paul Simon uses this as a metaphorical way to show how times in life come and go. Overall, I find this song compliments times of change and uncertainty such as these well.
